Hey everyone, Whats your rules set of choice for 28mm mini's in the Punic wars? I already play Impetus and Hail Caesar, but of course as a gamer am always looking for other options, and with the new Victrix models I am planning on making some Romans and Carthaginian forces and found myself curious as to weather or not there are any rule sets that really excel at playing the Punic wars at that scale. I plan on focusing on the 2nd Punic war if that matters. |

I am going to use Sword and Spear link for my next Punic Wars foray in 28mm (having already done it in 10mm and 1/72 using Impetus, HC, WAB, WMA, etc…) |

Rules are not scale dependent. DBA, Armati, AMW, FoG and Impetus are all good. Phil |

28mm cannot begin to do real ancient battles unless you've got a tennis court to play on. |

Hannibal's army is very hard to model in any set of rules. |

WAB, definitely the best work on the period. But yeah, dba. |

We played this Lake Trasimene battle twice in two days a few years ago. Day one we used Ager Proelii, day two we used Commands and Colors with some ammendments for there being no hex grid and giving bonuses for weapons, morale class, flanks, etc., like a more usual table & minis game. Both worked well.
We recently fought our own 2nd Punic War campaign – start to finish – using Hannibal Rome Vs Carthage (board game) for the map and narrative bits and Commands and Colors for the table battles. Fun was had by all and the table battles tended to be resolved in a session. link |

Wow Olicana, that is an absolutely inspirational game you have there! Thanks for posting those pictures and link! |

We've played lots of Punic Wars games with Sword & Spear, including when we were playtesting the rules. Over the last two weeks I've introduced two new players to the rules, playing Gauls vs. Carthage and Syracuse vs. Carthage, both of which were exciting and enjoyable games. |

@olicana: I had been following your campaign fairly closely. What was the outcome of the battle that was reported on 26 June 2014? Do you have a blog post that summarizes the campaign's outcome? Cheers! |

Skeptic, everything went haywire here for a while (holidays, minor domestic crisises, etc.) and posts got neglected. By the time I came around to report, the notes I'd made and the shots on my camera made no sense at all. However, the outcome was as follows. There were five or six indecisive battles around Carthage between Hanno and Scipio. The Carthaginians emptied Spain to reinforce there perilous position in Africa whilst the other armies lay stranded in Sicily and northern Italy (Hannibal ended the campaign in Cisalpinian Gaul. Rome was so heavily garrisoned nothing could come south). Exhausted by the best part twenty years of war both sides sat down to discuss terms. Carthage had managed to survive. Both sides had an equal number of political control points (provinces). So Carthage, by the skin of her teeth, won! I'll have to go back and put a post script on the last campaign post. Although unreported, we managed, somehow, to actually finish the campaign. The only changes I'd make to how we did it, is to increase the chances of victories being decisive – not by changing the rules, but by introducing a way of declaring a victory normal, probing, or double envelopment under the board game classification, and making double envelopment easier to achieve. Armies were not destroyed often enough – they lingered on and on. |

James's Trasimene is one stunning-looking game! :) Simon PS I will be publishing a set of rules next Friday called "To the Strongest!" that scrivs kindly mentions above, that might suit: link |

olicana, that looks like a beautiful battle. I can only imagine that it is a lot of fun to play on. I am looking at both Command and Colors and Sword and Spear, both look pretty solid. Thank you also for the DBA big battles link, it was an interesting read. Big Red, I will definitely look those rules over, thank you for the link and heads up! The name is pretty awesome too, I love Alexander. The companions in the picture look aces. |

Basic Inpetus. Add on some rules for evasion for skirmishers and light horse and these are the rules with the most elegant combat system by miles for the ancient period – and they're free! |
