It's a bit late – but here's a quick report on my personal commemoration of the Battle of Cocos, 9 November 1914: link

In my re-fight of this classic duel, there was a jaw-dropping finale! Thanks for dropping by.

thanks. Pretty interesting

Thanks for sharing.

What rule sets did you use for the "fun" version and the "rematch"?

My son will be 7 soon and loves to play games – but have to keep them a bit on the simpler side (he can handle X-wing).

Thanks,
-Tim

Thanks guys.

I actually used naval Thunder but just cut a few corners to make it simple. I'm still searching for a set of simple WWI rules – we need an expansion for FAST RULES FOR SMALL SHIPS AND BIG MINDS: link

Alan,

Yes as straight forwards as Naval Thunder is for an adult, there are still a lot of "to hit modifiers", which would be be a bit much for a primary school kid to do quickly.

Lately I've been playing Grand Admirals – Castles of Steel from Majestic 12 games. It is easier than NT (its mean to be a fleet game), and while it has counters and hexes, there are rules to use miniatures with no hexes.

The new edition of Grand Fleets 3 (also by MJ12) promises to be somewhere in between Grand Admiral and their previous Grand Fleets 2 in ease of gameplay. Hope it comes out soon.

Hi Alan, great report. We use Victory at Sea rules, then the WWI supplement for ship stats. You wont find any rules easier and fun. Roll to hit, roll to damage. Basic.

They sound like really interesting options to follow up.

Yes, the 'light' version was just something I made up on the spot – was really just a bit of fun for the little guy.

I like the sound of Grand Admirals – the level of abstraction of a fleet game would probably make small encounters more accessible for younger kids.

I'll follow up Victory at Sea too, good one.

I really enjoy finding approachable rules for the kids – they are my best hope for an opponent most of the time!
