Back in July, I played another game against the nione year old of a friend. I have played twice against him before earlier in the year. It has taken me this long to post it – he is ten now! I played outside, in daylight and on a 9'x5' table. The latter the first time I have played on this large a table in 10 years. I used to play WW2 20mm all through the 80s on a table tennis table and so for me it is "the right size". It was great! And playing at night for 4 years I am amazed at what daylight does for gaming photos. For a full report see this post on my blog:

Nice report, I like the idea of removing transports once they have done their job. Nice to see the carriers getting a role in the game. I certainly agree about 'good daylight' helping photography, indoor lighting plays hell with my white balance and it is hit or miss to get it right – especially for my video which through its idiot proof automation is usually off by some margin.

You game flow seemed pretty convincing, so it looks like your rules have just about hit the right mark.

Great stuff Shaun, and about time! It went so well, you should play all your games outdoors I think. And who the heck has 13 Bren carriers?

You really did cut back on the troops, only eight tanks on a 9' x 5'. Kudos, it looked great, much more realistic troop density than most of us usually manage. Looked like a great fight, and it's got me green with envy, looking forward to the day my boys are old enough to beat up on me (on the table).

Thanks for getting this written up and posted, great stuff again.

V/R,
Jack

Great looking game.

Norm, I think we have been playing the "remove transports" thing since 1980! I have seen it explicitly in a few rules, I think BKC does it (or the first edition did anyway). I have been playing 1d6 +/- a few modifer type games for so long, I can do it automatically. But I found that the the 9 year old (and his dad) prefer to roll more dice with less modifiers. I think the rules work well, but prefer the single die version! I am just a "point the camera and take a picture, crop it later" person – daylight makes this so incredibly easy!

Jack – I have thought on this, and most of the WW2 games I have played over the last 35 years have been with about 6-12 tanks and about 50-100 infantry. It seems only the size of the table changes, but the number of figures stays the same!

I have wanted 13 bren carriers on the table since 1980 and only 34 years later my dream has been realised :-)

Excellent stuff Shuan! Great to see you back…and I agree with Jack (that's a first…) I look forward to a time where my boys are old enough to go to war with me :)

The size and scale of the battle are really impressive too…nothing like getting lots of hardware on the table…I think I've two bren carriers so Ive some catching up to do :)

That is so cool. I can't wait till my 4 1/2 year is a little older as I can start that too :D
Or might start now with him :D
