Don't know but the author is the Chief of Military History of the US Army. Found this link

This book by James H. Carleton was published in 1848 and the copy shown is the edition printed by George Nafziger.

I just got my own copy, and I highly recommend it. I would still read Smith, Bauer, and Mansfield, the booklet available from the US Army Center for Military History, and the chapter in "The Other Side" by Alcaraz (available in PDF for free)for balance and context.

I am studying the Naziger reprint now while working to finish "Gone To See The Elephant," and the only disappointment is the absence of the large map that accompanied the original edition. Fortunately, that map (by the US Military Engineers on site) is also available on
the Internet and if printed out, goes a long way to help clarify initial dispositions and subsequent movements.

Because this book is available directly from Nafziger, don't feel that you must buy this one now or forever regret it. You can get it (and Mansfield) here: nafzigercollection.com

Enjoy!
