GAME TITLE: Ambush at Uitkomst: Volkmann's Gambit! (German South-West Africa, 1904)
PERIOD: Colonial
SCALE: 25mm
RULES: The Sword and the Flame (Modified)
GAME DESCRIPTION: January 18, 1904: The Herero uprising that began four days ago has now spread north to the Grootfontein District! After raiding several German farmsteads, a strong force of mounted and foot Hereros are reported to be in the mountains near the Boer farm of Uitkomst. The Herero force is commanded by their local leader – Kapitän Mbatona – and by an outsider: a Schlachten-General (i.e., War General), recognizable by a large white ostrich feather in his hat. The Schlachten-General has come from paramount chief Samuel Maharero to help coordinate the general uprising in the North.
Oberleutnant Richard Volkmann has just a handful of Schutztruppen, augmented by a few more German reservists and war volunteers and by a number of Boers, to oppose Mbatona's much larger, well-armed war band. The Boer families from Uitkomst have been brought with their livestock to Grootfontein under escort, and now Volkmann's mixed force of Germans and Boers rides out toward the mountains, looking to surprise and engage Mbatona and his Hereros. This is a totally new Herero scenario by Tim Abbott and Roy Jones!
