What method do you use to paint the gold braid on officers uniforms? American Civil War Confederate officers to be exact.

Paint it black first then paint the gold over that.

Black undercoat, followed by a dark yellow color. Then take a regular yellow and paint little dots on the dark yellow to give the impression of braid.

I use a technique seen in White Dwarf many years ago, basically snakebite leather, bleached bone and skull white (or whatever they are called these days!) blending up through the three in order. Gives a good golden fabric look without actually being metalic so perfect for braiding etc…

I use brown as an undercoat and then a dry brush of gold

Black base, first highlight dark copper, second highlight bright gold.
