A work colleague of mine's husband flew Phantom's in Vietnam and she has been looking for a model of his plane for many years. Apparently Revell made his actual aircraft in 1974 as: Revell McDonnell Douglas F-4E USA F. Phantom II, Item #: H-198, Scale: 1:32. The aircraft is distinctive in that it has the shark's teeth and "Hey Jude" on the fuselage. If anyone has either this kit or a diecast of this aircraft that they would be willing to sell could they get in touch at: JW Davenport at optonline dot net. Thanks |

It's a good looking plane. Checking Ebay, looks like it comes up once a month or so. You should put in a search and follow it. I Googled after-market decal sets, but couldn't find any. |

Yes, that's the one I found, just wondering if anyone has got one they'd be prepared to part with. |

@22ndFoot as a previous winner of IPMS I can safely say the best and most accurate of any F4-Phantom kit (any mark/version) is the Phantom kits by Fujimi ;) |

Marcus, I'm sure that's right – but I'm specifically after the Revell version as that is Captain Baxter's actual plane. How cool would it be to give the chap the kit of his actual crate? |

Another possibility is an out-of-production Hobby Master 1/72 diecast Phantom II, product code HA1931, with markings for "Chico the Gunfighter." It has the sharkmouth and LC tail code, but it's AF 68 339, while "Hey Jude" is AF 68 317, and in a slightly different style. It wouldn't be too difficult to modify, though. You'd have to add "Hey Jude" and a few other details, but again that wouldn't be difficult. What *would* be difficult is the price. HM diecasts are highly sought after, and looking at current and completed listings on EBay shows most prices in the $130 USD range. Ouch! Still, if she really wants one for her husband, that might be the route to go, especially if modeling skills are a concern. It also comes with a wide variety of underwing stores, so you might be able to match exactly a photo of the actual plane's loadout. Another benefit of the diecast is the size: At 1/72, it's half the size of the Revell model. There are some excellent pics of the diecast at the following link. Beautiful! link |
