Hello….i've the possibility of buying RENEDRA mixed tents set (2 Bell, 2 Dog, 2 Ridge)..please which is the different use of each of them…are they all suitable for XIX c. Colonial setting..abova all British…and in which ratio?..maybe Bell ones for officers, Ridge for stores and dog ones for humble privates?
thanks

Yes, all are suitable for mid to late 19th Century British colonial forces. The dome tents were more old-fashioned but both styles were used side by side in some campaigns. I believe the main difference between officers and enlisted was how many men per tent.

I use those same Renedra tents for my NWF and Second Afghan War forces and to me the dome tent says "British colonials" in a big way, but the other styles don't detract at all.

Thanks Mad Guru..always appreciated suggestions from such an expert like you..in fact i consider the idea of spending time in painting tents/encampments useful only to FYW and Colonial Wargame scenarios…i'm thinking at Intombe River/Isandwalna and Tirah Campaign NWF tribesmen's assault on a British camp.

I wouldn't be surprised if "a tent is a tent" but to be on the safe side: Would those Renendra tents be suitable/accurate for the French in Algeria or West Africa?
There were a couple of times when the French neglected to post suitable sentries and were surprised and cut to pieces. TIA

Here's a photo from the Crimean War and an illustraton of Africa in 1886, both showing Zouaves tents. The Crimean photo shows "bell" style tents and the later illustration shows a couple of other styles. They all look very similar to the Renedra British tents IMHO…

At the moment I use Bell tents. Lots of pics showing them in colonial campaigns. There would be something like 12-16 men and NCOs per tent, 2 field officers or 1 senior officer.

But i think theres room for both types.

Cheers
