Here's an interesting podcast on Ireland and the career of Brian Boru. The discussion is fairly wide ranging and there is not much focus on the battle itself. However one of the scholars on the panel drawing from archeology talks about the significance of archery and armour for the Viking forces. He opines that the Vikings would have the best of it at distance fighting and that Irish victories were won by fighting at very close quarters.
