How important is it that units in LoTR SBG have round bases?

I'm picking up a batch and at least for line troops, I would prefer to base them up on squares like the rest of my fantasy figs in case I want to use them in games of Kings of War and such.

If/shen I play LoTR SBH, I probably will be providing both sides.

Part of the mechanic is to separate the combatants after each individual combat – having round bases makes this much easier. I did the opposite and mounted all my fantasy and dark ages troops on round bases so I could use them easily with the LOTR system. ;-)

You can seperate the figures using square bases.

They went with round to make sure you could not use common figures in Warhammer and LOTR – so you'd have to buy two collections of figs.

Mount as you wish – I'd recommend square.

I use square as well for SBG and have never had a problem as figures are more spread out. Go with what you have I think. Then you can recombine if you want to use your figures as units.

I just picked up some figures as well. what would be suggested, 20mm or 25mm squares?

Only Official Games Workshop bases may be used.

I don't play in tournaments. I am more concerned about figure size in terms of fitting on the base and being able to line them up nicely in formations.

I don't have any square bases, so figured I would find out before ordering.

The round bases are especially useful for the skirmish nature of the games, since formations are extremely fluid. They also permit the surrounding of a model – six enemy figures in the case of a standard infantry figure, for instance – which would be awkward at best for square bases. Note that the cavalry bases (and some smaller Monsters) are on 40mm circular bases rather than the 25mm of the infantry. Larger monsters have larger circular bases but some of the very largest have ovals.

I mix and match square and round bases in my LOTR SBG battles but tend to mount the squares temporarily (Blue Tak or similar temporary fixative) on two pence coins which are pretty much the same size as the standard Slottabase. Coin or washers of a similar size may be available where you are.

*Thomas Thomas,
makes a great point. GW was 'infamous' for their "Buy Me Rules" and 'tricks' if you will. The round bases were just another way to keep that going.

However, in small skirmish games, to a point I agree, round bases somehow look better, IMHO, I prefer the 25mm /1in. square for a couple of reasons.

1st For this scale it gives me more 'room', and makes them fit more easily, if I choose to use movement trays and group them into 'companies/ regiments" etc for larger battles.
2nd Square bases do tend to give you that 90' 'front arc' view using the corners as guidlines.

For those that mistakenly think only GW bases / guidlines have to be followed. I will share soemthing the owner of my FLGS pointed out to a fellow gamer once.

"Once you buy it, there Yours. So if your happy with the paint job/ basing etc. Then ITS RIGHT.
