With the large number of newcomers getting into Chain of Command, we thought we'd start a series of Talking Tactics for Chain of Command.  For the gamer getting into the rules, or one considering trying them, these will introduce them to historical tactics and how real life tactics apply to the game as well as applying them effectively.

Part One is the introduction, here:

As always, introductions are a bit dull, so I thought I'd add Part Two as well which looks at reconnaissance and the Patrol Phase.

I do hope these are of interest.  If anyone would like to see any specific issues covered then please just leave feedback so I can sort that out for you.

Very informative and helpful.

Thanks Rich. Will also help in thinking tactics for the next command level up, i.e. IABSM. Better than my usual "charge!".

morrigan06 Nov 2014 9:10 a.m. PST

Excellent, thanks!

Weasel06 Nov 2014 10:20 a.m. PST

Very nice, thanks for sharing.

My usual tactics seems to be "Make sure everybody is too far apart to support each other, then have each unit attack the worst possible target on the battlefield. If in doubt, fix bayonets" :)

What a brilliant idea. Thanks for these guides – I'm sure that anyone interested in historical tactics will find these very useful indeed.

These are good. I watched the YouTube videos, which are good. These help to fill in the blanks.

Weasel, sounds like you would make an excellent commander for certain nations I can think of, who shall remain anonymous in order to prevent offending anyone.

Of course, I suspect all nations may have commanders like that at some point, but hopefully they get weeded out, early on during a war, if not before.

I could lead any excellent outfit into utter disaster, no doubt :)

A lot of games leave out the factor that leaders will tend to get better, over-all, as a war progresses. Something to think about.

Nice supplement.

hi rich,
as usual nice post.

say, have you posted a Pacific USMC army list yet?

Cheers

Steve

That might have been just enough to pull me in. Got to get the Americans done soon. Thanks.

Seems like time for you to do another YouTube video

donlowry06 Nov 2014 6:44 p.m. PST

Excellent!

Crucible Orc,
There are unofficial (member created) lists for USMC and Japan 1944 in the files section of the TFL Yahoo site. There is also a 1st draft of a 1941 US Philippines list there. Both are in the Chain of Command folder in the files.

Pedrobear07 Nov 2014 6:24 a.m. PST

Oh I do hate Chain of Command rules – they make me feel stupid every time I disregard historical tactics and lose as a result of doing so.

axabrax07 Nov 2014 8:06 a.m. PST

This is awesome, thanks. Patrol phase is something a lot of new players have trouble grocking.

Would love to see the Pacific theater get some love. It's odd because there are official early war Japanese lists and mid-late war Chindit lists, but no mid-late war Japanese lists and no US marines lists at all.

vtsaogames07 Nov 2014 12:09 p.m. PST

I have played two games. In the second I killed myself during the patrol phase, had one jump off point isolated from my own side and near German cover. This was because I pushed a patrol marker too far forward. Have to bookmark these items and review them before my next game.

You mean I need a plan? Wot an idea.

Also, Richard, for the memory challenged, where are those downloads with various army platoons listed? Like the Spanish Civil War? And the various WWII platoons that weren't in the rules? Please help an old coot out.

genew4907 Nov 2014 1:09 p.m. PST

Spanish Civil War lists:

WW2 Lists:

Both of the above found on The TFL Forum under Chain of Command:

Late War US, British and German lists are included in the CoC rules and both the Winterstorm and 29th Let's Go supplements include lists specific to those mini-campaigns.
