"Laser has 1.2-mile range and can bring down small low-flying aircraft within five seconds of locating target. China has developed a highly accurate laser weapon system that can shoot down light drones at low altitude, state media reported. The machine has a 1.2-mile range and can bring down "various small aircraft" within five seconds of locating its target, the official Xinhua news agency said, citing a statement by the China Academy of Engineering Physics (CAEP), one of the developers. If I recall correctly, the altitude limit is around 500 meters, so is only good against very small, man-packed drones, and not the much larger, and higher flying, Predator and Reaper drones we usually use. On a related note, apparently Lockheed is also working on a laser cannon as well (not really sure why they call it a cannon, since I suspect it will make little, if any noise when fired). |

Yes, the drone shone above is a Global Hawk, if I'm not mistaken, and usually flies at tens of thousands of feet in altitude, so well beyond China's laser (at least until they develop a stronger weapon). |
