A while back I saw a company producing miniatures that looked very much like Star Wars tie fighters and x-wings but I can't recall their name. Can anyone help out? I think they did them in a couple of scales, one of which was maybe 1/285.

Yup Studio Bergstrom. Also you can find some on Shapeways.

Ground Zero Games sells some NAC fighters that look suspiciously like X-Wings and Y-Wings, but they are much smaller than you seem to be looking for.

Galactic Knights Terran ships and fighters are certainly Star Wars inspired as well.

The Bergstrom ships are approximately one inch long…
My friend has a bunch of the Empire ships and they are indeed nice.

The link THOSMOS listed, to Studio Bergstrom, is a great variety of sci-fi space ship options.
