The Islamic State is raising an army of child soldiers, and the West could be fighting them for generations to come.

"They stand in the front row at public beheadings and crucifixions held in Raqqa, the Islamic State's stronghold in Syria. They're used for blood transfusions when Islamic State fighters are injured. They are paid to inform on people who are disloyal or speak out against the Islamic State. They are trained to become suicide bombers. They are children as young as 6 years old, and they are being transformed into the Islamic State's soldiers of the future.

The Islamic State has put in place a far-reaching and well-organized system for recruiting children, indoctrinating them with the group's extremist beliefs, and then teaching them rudimentary fighting skills. The militants are preparing for a long war against the West, and hope the young warriors being trained today will still be fighting years from now…"

We can estimate how many children are being indoctrinated by knowing how many families adhering to IS there are. I have not heard of widespread abduction of others' children to turn into the new "Janissaries". As IS has not grown very big in terms of sheer numbers, the actual number of children must also be small, for now.

Meanwhile, the "West" is "indoctrinating" its own next generation of "child soldiers". And we always have done so. The difference is only the contents of the indoctrination. And therein is the difference in moral justification. ISIS training children to become their replacement soldiers does no possess moral equivalency to the training our children receive….

We train our kids to become Jedi… much more powerful and also with greater moral authority.

Most, if not all, don't fulfill their father's new hope and become tax accountants or lawyers instead.

Many will be targets sooner or later … I'd expect …

Cacique Caribe28 Oct 2014 6:37 p.m. PST

Oh great. As if these ISIS crazies weren't enough.

Now here comes another crop, this time of ready-made mini-psychos that people will hesitate to shoot. They'll be terror-bombing us for decades. This is bad news.

As young adults they can get asylum in Europe and the US/Canada. There won't be a move to curb this until the majority of people feel a threat. You have to hope that young jihadis are seduced by starbucks and ipads.

Not surprised by this at all, since many other Muslim groups in the region raise their children that way, too. They're shown all the time, wearing army camo, faction headbands, and holding weapons (when they're old enough).

The indoctrination begins at an early age as well, with even Mickey Mouse clones in cartoons calling for Jihad.

50,000 troops is a pretty large army.

Certainly far more than we have in the region, and much more effective than those of a lot of other players there, too, including the Iraqi army (supposedly, only the Shia militias, and Iranian troops in Iraq are staving off the fall of the country, currently).

Where did you see that?

Al Qaeda school in Syria. Teaching jihad to children

Awesome decision to try to take down Assad. I mean, we can't have him stamping out jihadists, can we?

aren't all children raised to be copies of the people who raise them? Whether they turn out that way is a different story though ….

I was looking for the far side cartoon which shows a couple of kids sneaking out of a circus tent with the headline "Billy and Lucy ran away from the circus to join corporate America."

Mako1129 Oct 2014 11:09 a.m. PST

I suspect the links above show the cartoons.

It's been all over the news, both in print, and on TV, showing Hamas, Hezbollah, the Muslim Brotherhood, and/or the Palestinians raising their children to hate non-Muslims.

Can't recall the new name for the mouse, but the footage shown was predictable, and disturbing.

Then again, what would you expect from a culture that raises their children to want to become suicide bombers?.

Rod I Robertson29 Oct 2014 1:27 p.m. PST

Are our kids any less indoctrinated then the children of the Middle East. We, through our media, imprint our kids with notions like consumerism, love of money, greed and many other traits which would be considered by many to be negative ideas. Sure we do not idealize suicide-bombers but our kids are just as violently indoctrinated towards conflict and violence by video games. That's why I have my students slow down and play table-top wargames. The slower pace gives them time to think and reflect on what they are doing and just perhaps some of them learn to consider the consequences of violence – real and simulated.

As a father of two (admittedly consumer-indoctrinated) children, I like the way you think Rod. grin

Slow and easy, kids. Pause and think.

Cacique Caribe29 Oct 2014 2:19 p.m. PST

I've fallen prey to the knee jerk reaction movement, even though it's not related to video games. I think it has more to do with watching example after example of media and politicians who, in their quest for 5 minutes of our attention, constantly jump to conclusions on every development, without having all the facts.

And when details finally come to light, and the "whole" story is finally known (as best as possible), we are no longer interested because we are being offered another barrage of sensational premature "reports". We are constantly letting them be the judges and the the ones who decide how we should feel about things. It's convenient and quick.

Nonetheless, those child "time bombs" will probably end up adopted by bleeding hearts in the US and will end up becoming introverted lone wolf terrorists, or will be recruited as sleepers (if they reconnect with the hive).

They'll have to promise them lots of candy and toys in paradise, if they're not yet interested in virgins.
