The Green Beret criticisms, contained in a U.S. Central Command "friendly fire" investigative file, provide a window into the flaws of a national army more than a decade in the making. The soldiers gave statements to investigators after going into battle June 8-9 in the Gaza Valley of Zabul province, northeast of Kandahar. The Green Berets told of Afghan soldiers refusing to fight and hiding among trees and behind a rock…"

Anybody could of told you that.
Afghan cultural attitude/breeding etc. will tell you why,when and how they will fight, if there is nothing in it for the individual (honor,pride and integrity of the fighting man not being part of it) then that horse ain't go. Think Soviet style commissars behind them with a loaded pistol and hey presto fighting troops.
Cheers and yes my Imperial Guard all get prodded into battle all the time :) ah what sacrifices, sacrifices but I get to win sometimes. |

I think it was in "The Young Officer's Reading Club" where the authors summary of the ANA was interesting. To paraphrse it went something along the lines of "we were trying to teach them how to fight when they had grown up fighting the Russians, The Taliban, Warlords and each other for generations. They knew how to fight they just didn't see what was in it for them. After this they would be neighbors and live with each other, with scores to settle so they acted with that in mind." |

No surprise there … the same could probably be said about the Iraqis … So much Western blood and treasure wasted … for no real results. It seems to me, many places in SWA, the ME, etc., are living in a Hell of their own creation, designs, predilections, etc. … |
