Every year, I buy my father an audiobook for Christmas so he doesn't rot his brain out on sports/talk radio during his long daily commutes. His tastes are very simple because he is a simple man, but I won't just buy him flannel shirts. Do you have any good recommendations for English-language audiobooks for the Medieval, Renaissance, 18th Century, and (non-ACW) 19th Century periods? Preferably something that isn't strictly American history.

Get him a subscription to Audible.com – lots of decent military history on there.

There is a ton of stuff on librivox.org. Just type in history in the search category. Best thing is that it is all free and in the public domain.

I've found the Portable Professor Series to be very good.

1776 read by David McCullough himself is a good one.

All or most of the Sears' books are on Audible and they are great. They also have Hard tack & Coffee among others.

Check the BBC Radio 4 website. Lots of history shows that are downloadable absolutely free. "in Our Time" is one of note, but there are hundreds of shows, history, religion, culture, philosophy, arts etc. Most are between 30 minutes to an hour, but often several in a series.
