We all know that AB miniatures aren't really 15mm scale, more like 18mm scale right?

I recently purchased some Wurttemberg foot artillery crews and scale creep has reached a new level.

check this out!

The standard bearer is 18mm tall to the eyes. The artilleryman is more than 20mm to the eyes. Ridiculously oversized.

The guy on the right is from AB?

I thought that AB did two ranges of Naps; one 15mm (declared size) the other 18mm (declared size). With scale creep on both perhaps that accounts for your giant.

BTW, very nice figures. Doing my Wurttys now in 28mm.

G'day, Goz.

I reviewed these on Spanner and the Yank in 2000 (the reviews were then on Deep Fried Happy Mice link , but the links are broken) and the difference between the size of these figures and the earlier AB releases was very obvious. Some of the artillery figures measured 19.5mm from base to eye, and all of the foot were over 18.5mm.

However, they are also some of the nicest figures I've seen, with excellent detail and animation. As long as they're not put in units with other brands, or used with smaller 15's, they don't stand out as giants on the table.

Cheers.

Dal.

Hi Dal:

Totally weird – I'll get those links fixed this week….

I wonder how they fit in with 20mm?

von Winterfeldt21 Oct 2014 5:54 a.m. PST

the scale creep is a bit of a downer in AB – or say scale inconsistency – like very nice Austrian French Revolutionary grenadiers but on the other hand quite big Dragoons compared to them

I like to use AB for heavy cavalry and other makes for lights – though sometimes the AB figures are too nice for me to stick to that rule.

To be honest the Wurt artillery are probably the biggest figures in the whole range and do stand out next to their infantry colleagues. The Wurt cavalry is fine.

Mark, cheers. It looks like the site "napoleomnicsgallery.com" has expired.

GT- they're a bit too small to look right with the HäT figures I tried them against. They may fit in with the older Airfix ranges, though.

baxterj, you're right about the cavalry, though they are still on the larger side. But they are the most accurate, using Fischhaber's plates as a guide.

Cheers.

Dal.

Dal,
That Spanner & the Yank (and remains) one of my all time favorite websites. I do wish you'd kept it going, but if you ever do decide to go back at it, please let us know.

Sigh. I blame myself…

We badgered Tony B to rush the remaining Wuerttembergers out for the AB Figures Wargames Weekend in 1999 (Eggmuehl 1809)…

:(

Jemima Fawr24 Oct 2014 4:44 p.m. PST

Agreed re Spanner & Yank. :)

I discovered Dal's site shortly after discovering the internet! I miss it so.

Jemima, don't be too hard on yourself. The article of that game in WI was the tipping point that got me into Napoleonics. 6,000 ABs later, still going strong.

Jemima Fawr02 Nov 2014 4:21 a.m. PST

Tidy! :)

I wish I could still find the photos (as well as those of the following Auerstaedt gam).

Jemima Fawr02 Nov 2014 9:19 a.m. PST

That should read 'game', not 'gam'! :)

VonBlucher02 Nov 2014 9:49 a.m. PST

R Mark Davies,
Did you have allot more pictures than was used in the WI articles?
John

Jemima Fawr03 Nov 2014 6:26 a.m. PST

Yes, stacks of them – actual pictures of the game being played over the three tables. The pics in WI were 'condensed' versions, set up in Newark specifically for Duncan to photograph. This was pre-digital photography (as far as I was concerned), so they're somewhere at the back of a drawer, behind stacks of other accumulated junk of 15 years!

I did however, recently find my photos of the 3rd AB Figures wargames weekend from 2001 (Fuentes de Onoro) which wasn't published in WI. I fully intend to scan them in at some point and post them up.

VonBlucher03 Nov 2014 11:00 a.m. PST

If you still have the negatives, you could always have them digitally put on a CD rom, as having a high end 35mm back in the day I would get a set of pics and also have it digitized to a CD Rom. Unsure if they still do this any more though and how reasonable the cost is.

Mark, can you get in touch with me at baxterj at optusnet dot com dot au
