Can anyone recommend a good book on Andreas Hofer's rising in 1809. There are mentions and inclusions in other books (e.g. '1809' and With Eagles to Glory') but I have not come across something specific. Can anyone help? |

In the German language I found a book concerning the military history of this uprising (only secondhand): Viktor Schemfil: Der Tiroler Freiheitskrieg 1809. Eine militärhistorische Darstellung. In: Schlern-Schriften. Band 335, Universitätsverlag Wagner, Innsbruck 2007, ISBN 978-3-7030-0436-0 Franz |

There are whole libraries on the subject in German, but many of these concentrate on Andreas Hofer, and many are of the more romantic kind. I recommend the book Viktor Schemfil. Very detailed and lots of maps. Not an easy read but a fair history that concentrates on military operations. It was available at the bookshop of the Tirol Panorama 2 years ago, and perhaps still is. Also recommended (mostly for its illustrations) is Pfaundler/Kofler, Der Tiroler Freiheitskampf 1809 unter Andreas Hofer. |

Thanks for all the recommendations. I am going to have to brush off my German clearly. |
