OK, so I'm kinda looking at doing A&I wars instead of Cold War for modern spearhead. My thing is that I don't know anything about them really, other than its desert warfare and one of them (???) had IS3 tanks, which are one of my favorites.

Would anyone be kind enough to provide a short synopsis and/or link on the different A&I conflicts, specifically relating to division ish size battles on the tabletop.

thanks guys

If you're on Scribd you could check out the copy of the old Avalon Hill board game. The rule book had a decent description of the conflict. You might also look for Battlefrony's Flames of War variant. It has some nice stuff on the '67 War. Finally there is always Wikipedia. I also think there are some of Military Channel shows on YouTube.

If you want to try something different, a vastly undergamed conflict is the 1956 Suez intervention.

You have a lot of WW2 armor in play, but you can finally fight Western tanks against Soviet equipment toe to toe:

SU-100s, T-34's, Archer SPAT, fighting against Centurions and Super Shermans.

The world's first helo air assault, occuring simultaneously with an amphibious invasion and paradrop. Israeli paradrops vs. Egyptian camel corps border patrols. This war has it all, and it barely lasted a week.

As a reference, one of the Avalon Hill General magaziness that had a cover story on the boardgame "Arab Israeli Wars" has an excellent article that is a summary of organisation and equipment from the '56 war through the '73 War. The copies of The General are all online; you'd have to search a bit to find the right issue.

I've got that old AH Game … The game even has one or two scenarios from '48.

Yes, the one you started to read, "Six Days of War: June 1967 and the Making of the Modern Middle East" is an awesome read. Surprisingly I found the "lead up" to the war the best, and insightful I've ever read on the subject. Also, another excellent book I read years ago, called "War of Atonement", about the 1973 Yom Kippur War. I recommend it highly. I've heard good things about the Chaim Herzog, book as well, but not have read it. I'm also looking to pick up the Bruce Quarrie book #5, having enjoyed his WWII gaming books. Lots of great info and interesting reading.

In March, 2017, I'm running two(2) Arab-Israeli 1967 war scenarios at GaryCon in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin. I'm running my game, called, "Prowling Panzers!" (copyright 2016)! It'll be sort of a playtest. So, I've been madly purchasing vehicles – Sho't Centurions, M-1 Super Shermans, M-50 (French) Super Shermans, M-51 Ishermans, T-55's, T-34/85's, etc.

I got of a lot of painting work ahead of me . . .
