Good day all.

In honor of the new 1864 miniseries, and the 150 years from the 2nd Schlesqig-Holstein War I played a solo game of Blood and Iron (a war boardgame). Here is the writeup with some thoughts about the consequences of the ahistorical result.

Very good and interesting article.

Correction: In the text, you have once mistaken Schleswig for Holstein.

I would say, your variant A) is very unlikely, c) seems to me the most likely case. The strength of Bismarcks politic at this time, was IMO, that it didnt depend to much on a military victory. To have austrian on his side and to ignore the Bund and the liberals was the important thing he tried. Even a not so deciding war would have shown Germany that Prussia was willing to fight for Germanys cause.

Thanks.

Personally I see B) more likely. In a European Congress it is very unlikely he gets what he wants. I think the other great powers will impose a Augustenburg candidate. Remember that for Bismarck this was not just about circumventing the Bund, but about creating a constitutional crisis that he could use to beat Austria.

The dual administration of the Duchies was a must here.
