I've been doing a lot of 15mm models lately and had some ideas for my own range of models and was wondering if I could get some feedback on one of the aliens. I plan on doing a Kickstarter (hopefully in November) under the company name Wolfshead Miniatures. Pics of the first model are here: link There will be 4-5 sculpts with a commander model. I have some ideas for a 4-legged mech as well. The model pictured is a rank&file trooper (not quite finished yet). Only one head is pictured, there will be 2-3 options The commander will have different arms, weapons and head as well. The model itself is about 23mm tall. I wanted it to tower over a human-sized model (causes fear in their enemies)! Most of the factions weapons will be slung under the forearm. So far I don't have any ideas for a heavy weapon trooper or any type of APC/tank. The second faction will be all mechanical/robotic. I haven't started them yet but I've a few ideas. For the 3rd faction I was thinking of a "bio-mechanical" aline race (like Tyranids or xenomorphs) or a cybernetic race (similar to the Strogg from Quake or similar to the aliens from the movie Virus. Any suggestions you guys might have would be welcome! |

Looks cool definitely different. Good luck with it. |

I'm liking that a lot, and would definitely buy a platoon of them, but there are too many aliens in 15mm that tower over humans. What are we? The runts of the universe? Would it work slightly smaller? |

Alright Im interested, I've really liked your work for other companies recently and this looks really good. |

A friend of mine would ask about the BSC (what he calls the "bull science"). An explanation that sóunds reasonable (;-)). Why would this alien look like it does ? For instance because his home planet is mainly steppe. Horselegs there would be very efficient. I would expect such a planet Earth-like, gravity and air compatible. So perhaps companions on this planet could be lizards ? As I understand it, the Steppe Racerunner on earth is very popular, though rather small. But something like (in 15mm scale) 10-15mm height for "modern troops" and some giants (30mm ?)looking like T-Rex ? |

Looking at your sample trooper here either shoulder mounted or hand held heavy weapons would over balance such creatures, would waist level weapons slung on both sides be practical? I really like the sound of a robotic race something not bipedal would be nice something insectile/reptile in basis would be different. |

From the standpoint of biology the anatomy of these looks psychologically unlikely. However I really like the aesthetic. This is a range I would definitely buy into. It is nice to see something truly "alien" not a man in a rubber suit nor an anthropomorphic terrestrial animal. |

I love it! Please keep us posted as these progress! |

OMFG I LOVE IT!!!!!!!!! I had developed a very similar alien about 25 years ago for my Traveller game, I am si happy to see this come to life! And at 23mm, it is a "small" alien in 28mm, which is what I had envisioned. Thank you! |

MechanicalHorizon, Excellent scupt work!!! Clearly defined detail along with beautiful smooth contours. About the design. We have been long overdue for a full range of quadruped aliens that aren't insect-ike. The finely done primate-like upper portion throws me off a little though, particularly when compared to the fantastic alien legs. I would have gone for a less humanoid upper body to match those incredible legs. Example of what I mean: link link link link link link link link Just a thought, of course. I still think it's beautifully sculpted and that it will have lots of fans. Thanks, Dan |

I could see these working brilliantly for 28mm Traveller! I really like the under slung weapons. |

Wow, thanks for the FB guys. When I sculpt I do try for realism, but I also want to keep the "fiction" in Science Fiction. @Cacique Caribe – I initially made the "test" armature more centaur-like but it felt too much like "fantasy in space". I came across this pic on Pinterest: link When I saw it I thought "That's it!" That's the look I wanted. Something vaguely human, that humans could identify with, but also alien. I also liked the longer arms. I think doing a model like the ones you posted links to are also possible, since I want the alien faction to have more variety. Maybe those guys could be the "heavy weapon" troopers? There is an "ape-like" armature I'm making for the aliens as a "close-combat" monster. It's modeled after the 4-armed apes from the movie John Carter, but instead of a head they will just have a large, fang-filled maw. They'll also be wearing combat armor! I'm doing a mock-up for the alien mech today. I'll post pics of it for FB later tonight. |

I think this models will be a good enemy to all human colonies.Nice looking aliens |

At that height I would buy some to fight my 20mm humans. |

Hey, OP, if you want any help digitally-sculpting weapons for these guys, you can send me some sketches and I'll see if I can do them justice. javelin98 AT lycos DOT com |
MechanicalHorizon | 16 Oct 2014 3:03 p.m. PST |
Thanks for the offer Javelin, but I'll be sculpting them myself. I don't really do sketches, I have a general idea of what I want and then I just start sculpting and see where it goes. |
Redroom | 16 Oct 2014 3:17 p.m. PST |
Looks nice, will something like that cast OK though with the thin legs? The link CC posted would make some nice very alien looking aliens too. |
MechanicalHorizon | 16 Oct 2014 3:29 p.m. PST |
Redroom, they'll be fine cast in metal. I wouldn't cast them in resin. I might also bulk them up with more armor plates, but I'm undecided on that. |

Cool beans! We'll look forward to seeing these become reality! |

Nice species. Quads are hard to do. I totally get the space fantasy thing you were trying to avoid. -Eli |

I didn't get to work on the mech mock-up last night, I had other commissions that needed attention. I'll see if I can get it posted by tomorrow. |

Terrement – I was thinking about that when I was trying to decide what kind of "hands" it would have. You can see from the pics I haven't added them yet. I was planning on "humanoid" hands, but with 2 long fingers and one thumb. I chose to use fore-arm mounted weapons due to the "fragile" looking nature of the alien. I think they would try to avoid close-combat and use "slave" creatures for that. This is only one type of alien from the faction, I want to have at least 3 more for the Kickstarter. The second alien, the close-combat monster, has been started but it's just a bulked-up armature at this point. Maybe something truly "alien" would be a good idea for the other ones. |

MechanicalHorizon: Asking for a bio-tech style alien terror race… I'd really like to see something along the lines of the pseudopod/tentacle style pods from Skyline, or the shifting tentacular bio-mech style from Edge of Tomorrow. I think either would make a good, faceless, terrifying race for human style armies to face. |
MechanicalHorizon | 17 Oct 2014 7:00 p.m. PST |
"shifting tentacular bio-mech style from Edge of Tomorrow" I'm doing a "test sculpt" for an Alpha right now. We'll see how it turns out. I should be done by Monday so I can post pics of it then. |

Here's a small update for the third set of aliens that will be in my Kickstarter. I hope to get it started sometime next week, I want to have enough WIP models to show backers what they'll get. Not sure what I'll call them yet, but here's some pics: imgur.com/a/FtbCR There will be two sizes with modular arms. The tentacles will form into different weapons like close combat or ranged. I think the heads will be something like this pic: imgur.com/fUZY0Ms Not sure of the squad size yet, maybe 1 large and 5 small per squad. I'm still working on the "mech" faction and will post pics of them tomorrow. Let me know what you think, feedback is always welcome. |

there are not words to describe how happy I am to see something like those bio-mechanical beasties even at this early stage, great work. |

Here's a quick WIP of the mech hover-trooper. For the mech faction there will also be a "walking" trooper, a Leader and a "walking" heavy trooper with heavy weapons imgur.com/CI6vpId |
