I stumbled across this wonderful bit of animation whilst researching The Battle of Kernstown and thought it might be of similar interest to those new to the ACW, and perhaps even to some who are long-toothed on the period. The Valley Campaign.

How popular is the First Battle of Kernstown as a wargame project and in the context of the ACW how interesting a battle was/is it? Thanks.

All I know is its a nightmare to be the rebels when playing the scenario from They Couldn't Hit and Elephant, and probably wasn't the best choice as a rulebook scenario!

Kernstown is, I suspect, a battle that maybe more popular with 28mm gamers because of the size of the action.

There are only a few brigades a side and it's fairly compact battlefield.

I've games it a couple of times and the Union numbers definitely help.

I've a soft spot for the battle, my wife is a direct descendant of Brig. Gen. James Shields who commanded the union forces and who inflicted the only tactical defeat of the war on "Stonewall" Jackson.

Lot's of errors in spelling (mostly commanders' names), but overall a neat little work. Too bad they skipped McDowell!

Not too bad. I did an exhaustive research of 1st Kernstown for my master's thesis, with a particular emphasis on the troop movements, so there are a few errors in the animated map, but overall, not too bad.
