Specifically during Punic wars.
Thanks

Depends on the detail.

Wooden if the back appears to be planked otherwise leathery.

madmick09 Oct 2014 2:24 p.m. PST

As Jim says.

Normally some shade of brown.

Korvessa09 Oct 2014 2:50 p.m. PST

I normally do an earth color (like umber) but have seen some drawings that have it the same color as the front

jefritrout09 Oct 2014 3:02 p.m. PST

Some sort of brown.

Coyotepunc and Hatshepsuut09 Oct 2014 3:05 p.m. PST

Dark brown.

Maddaz11109 Oct 2014 3:08 p.m. PST

There is some suggestion that internal colour may have been a dulled version of the front colour.

I would go with a red brown colour.

Red

Bandolier09 Oct 2014 4:16 p.m. PST

Brown – with a rough highlight. No one looks there anyway.

DColtman09 Oct 2014 4:28 p.m. PST

..sometimes I don't bother, just leave it undercoated [hangs head in shame]

Katzbalger09 Oct 2014 4:41 p.m. PST

A light brown (almost tan).

I myself would go with some neutral color such as light brown, but I have seen some examples of shields from before and after the Punic Wars that had the interior painted some color or other. Some Greek shields, for example. Though a much later example, the Roman shields found at Dura Europos had interiors painted with elaborate designs.

Pictors Studio09 Oct 2014 5:55 p.m. PST

Medium brown.

Twilight Samurai09 Oct 2014 6:25 p.m. PST

If Roman, same colour as the front.

goragrad09 Oct 2014 8:52 p.m. PST

Roman a shade of red brown.

Others the same shade as spear shafts – currently a medium brown.

Patrick R09 Oct 2014 9:06 p.m. PST

various types of Wood, leather, dull red etc.

Martin Rapier09 Oct 2014 11:12 p.m. PST

Red, for those armies who painted the insides of their shields red, otherwise a dull brown.

Generally a medium brown. I painted some Republican Roman shields the same color front and back and I didn't like the way it looked.

I finally settled on black although arms, hands, and iron/bronze fittings would be their appropriate colors.

davbenbak10 Oct 2014 6:57 a.m. PST

may not be historic but the same color as the front

steamingdave4710 Oct 2014 7:08 a.m. PST

Usually a colour representing wood.

For me I paint them dark brown…like scorched brown. If the figure has a black undercoat, I just leave the backs black. Mind you I collect in 15mm and the shields are usually sculpted onto the figure.

ZULUPAUL Supporting Member of TMP10 Oct 2014 5:28 p.m. PST

I use a leather brown
