SB has just come out with some 79th NYSM in both trews and kilts |
Disco Joe | 08 Oct 2014 4:56 p.m. PST |
But they are in marching pose only. |

I was recently finishing up an ACW project using Redoubt figs. I got a few Steve Barber models for variety on heads and to see what the figs were like. Nice figs. |

Personally, I prefer marching poses and then advancing poses above all others. |

I'm a marching man too! So many companies poses make anything else a pain to line miniatures up behind each, either on the table or in storage. That applies to AWI or Naps too. |

Yes, agreed. Marching first and foremost. |
Disco Joe | 09 Oct 2014 4:01 a.m. PST |
I rather advancing and then firing. Marching is to boring. No action. |

Advancing poses are better for skirmishing models NOT regiments moving. They almost never used the poses usually sculpted as 'advancing'. They did not march in line or column into battle using 'advancing' poses. "At the trail" was one way of moving but it was almost never used going into combat. It might be normal for other times in Europe but not in the ACW. The MOST common poses would always be "Right shoulder shift", "Shoulder arms" and to a lesser extent "Support arms". |

I always thought of advancing poses as charging. Leveled bayonets at the last moments before contact. |

I prefer figures at the shoulder or right shoulder shift. Especially right shoulder shift as that was used for advancing at the double quick and therefore the figures can be sculpted looking more animated. Also with arms held in those positions it is easier to mount the troops in two ranks on a base. Charging with leveled bayonets looks cool but the figures take up a lot of space. Also, the second rank would not have leveled bayonets, but of course no one mounts them that way. |

Usually you'd only go to "Charge Bayonets" when very close to the enemy. You wouldn't do it early. To my way of thinking… your mileage may vary… some European sculptors like that pose for ACW. I don't know why for ACW. |

my tastes have changed somewhat over the years from mainly firing/charging figures predominating in the front ranks of my first Confederates ….newer additions heavily favour the 'right shoulder shift' option with a few other poses thrown in for variety's sake |

I don't think the 79th ever wore their kilts in the field, did they? |
TKindred | 11 Oct 2014 5:23 p.m. PST |
You are correct, Don. There is no hard evidence that I am aware of, of the 79th ever wearing kilts in battle, or even on campaign. |
bgbboogie | 19 Oct 2014 9:42 a.m. PST |
I read in Battles and Leaders that the 79th did wear the kilt very early on, but when climbing fences they got fed up of the ribald comments from their comrades and dropped the kilt. |
