First generation speaks only the old language. Second generation learns the old language first, from parents, then learns English at school. Third (or fourth or fifth -- at some point) marries outside the group, or it is just too much trouble, and they speak English from infancy.

There are exceptions, as there are to every pattern. Fredericksburg Texas (Nimitz home) still operates in English and German, after 150 years or so, I believe. If a group WANTS to retain its native language and works hard at it, they can.
