"On Thursday, Oct 2, at the "F. Cesari" military airbase at Galatina (Lecce province), the Italian air force's new T-346 training aircraft flew its first mission with two instructor pilots from the 61st Stormo (wing). Routine flights, conducted until now by mixed crews from the Reparto Sperimentale di Volo (flight test unit) at Pratica di Mare and test pilots from Alenia Aermacchi, will now be flown by unit personnel, marking the effective entry into service of this new, advanced training system…"

Does it fly straight? Short fuselage aircraft often have directional stability problems. Not a desirable characteristic in a trainer. |

It's been selling – Israel, Poland and Singapore have ordered aircraft in addition to Italy. Singapore and Israel have already started taking delivery.
The Russian version, the Yak-130, (was originally a co-joint Russian-Italian venture) has also sold in reasonable numbers (Algeria, Russia, Syria (order unclear), Bangladesh and Belarus).

So it's gotta be doing something right especially as Singapore and Israel are rather picky.

Now there's some wishful thinking given the T-38 replacement program keeps getting delayed. And if you want something that's air defence capable, you're better of going with the Korean T/A-50. |
