There was a squadron of Hessian Hussars accompanying the Hessian contingent sent to Scotland during the Jacobite Rebellion. According to Stuart Reid's Osprey Frederick the Great's Allies1756-63 (page 41), their uniforms were Light Blue dolman and pellises with red collar and cuffs, and buff breeches. The Project Kronoskaf Seven Years War site has a page on their uniform, as below: link It is very similar, apart from having blue collars. There is a lot more detail than in the Osprey. Confusingly there is also an illustration of this unit in the Stuart Reid Osprey Cumberland's Culloden Army 1745-46 on plate H3. This shows a yellow hussar uniform, quite different in colour to the other two sources. Stuart Reid's books of 2010 and 2012 therefore show completely different colours for the uniform. Can anyone throw any light on which is the most likely uniform. My feeling is to accept the Kronoskaf website as the best source. Rod |

That's a nice-looking uniform. They should make a fine-looking unit on your wargaming table! |

I know that in later years it was the light blue and yellow combination. Reid is usually spot-on. |

The problem is that in two of his books he describes entirely different uniforms for the same tiny unit. Stuart Reid's Osprey Frederick the Great's Allies1756-63 (page 41) says their uniforms were Light Blue dolman and pellises with red collar and cuffs, and buff breeches, whereas Stuart Reid's Osprey Cumberland's Culloden Army 1745-46 on plate H3 shows an entirely yellow hussar uniform. I think you have hit the nail on the head yourself. One book describes the unit in 1745 The other in 1756-63. Maybe the uniform changed in the intervening years? |

Just to muddy the waters further, I am currently reading Christopher Duffy's The Best of Enemies, about the Hessians in the Jacobite Rebellion. On pages 59-60 he mentions the Hessian Hussars probably wearing white dolman jackets with rose red pelisses, although he goes on to say it was possible that they were already wearing the Attilla blue of the Hessian Hussars in the Seven Years War (ie the Kronoskaf Project SYW uniform). No mention of yellow uniforms. I am going to go for the Kronoskaf Project SYW uniform: link Rod |
