I found this picture of T26 chassis with what looks like some sort of AA guns mounted to it. It is a rather unique looking thing and I have never heard of anything like it. I was hoping one of our experts here on TMP would recognize it and maybe give some backstory on it.

It is a Soviet M1939 85 mm anti-aircraft gun. Obviously, a field modification, but by which side? It is the same gun that was fitted to the T-34 and KV-1 to make the T-34/85 and KV-85.

here's a whole pile of stuff on T26 variants. Yours is in there :)

apparently its called an SU-6

Usually captured vehicles would have pretty prominent nazi markings, to prevent friendly fire.

I think its the 76.2mm Model 31 (or 38) as the 85mm had a rather distinctive muzzle brake

I agree with David … it is an SU-6.

Some key visual recognition characteristics:
High-elevation gun mount (not characteristic of 76.2mm guns). Recognized by the positioning of the trunions well behind the pivot.

Fold-down superstructure panels. The hinges are visible, particularly on the side. This was not done on the assault-gun / mobile artillery vehicles built on T-26 chassis.

It is clearly an anti-aircraft mounting. The SU-6 is the only SPAA I know of on the T-26 chassis. I don't think the Soviets did any experimental mountings of 76.2mm AA guns onto post-1936 tank chassis.

My prior posting was in error. After looking into the question of the M1931 (or 38), and the SU-6 specs, I find that Black Bull was right, the gun is a 76.2mm AA gun M1938. This was the gun mounted on the SU-6. All of 4 such SPAAs were built.

"All of 4 such SPAAs were built."

Enough for an entire battery then!

I am sure gamers will be fielding these as SPAT guns before you know it….

More than enough to justify adding it to world of tanks!

That is a very personal looking vehicle, though I am not sure I would have wanted to actually go into action in one of those. Then again, had I been a Soviet tanker at the time, I might not have been given much choice over it.

I'm amazed that the T26 chassis could support the weight and recoil of a 76mm gun! It's only 10 tons!

Then again, we're seeing 120mm and 155mm guns mounted on ~18ton chassis today, so I guess it's possible… Not to forget the Semovente da 90/53, with the Italian 90mm AA gun mounted in a stretched M14/41 (14 ton) tank chassis!

I want to see someone use this in FOW. grin

The one with the 122mm on it looks like it would roll over backwards if you fired it.
