I have started a little private project that will allow me to use all my WotC Star Wars models on the tabletop, using the 40k rules.

Along the way, I thought it might be fun to do a little Design Diary of the process;

Hmm, using current 40K rules…

That were written by GW individuals who have no clue on how to write rules.

Fact:

GW have to go to 7th Edition 40K when 6th Edition was only around two years old.

That should tell you that finding a better set of rules to use.

Pete Melvin01 Oct 2014 8:07 a.m. PST

Not a 40K player, and I agree there are better rules but thats a bit of a snotty attitude. If he finds it fun, who cares?

MongooseMatt01 Oct 2014 8:13 a.m. PST

Mithmee: I would have to disagree. I've been with 40k since Rogue Trader (God, I am old…) and I have found they hang together extremely well with a lot of the ambiguity beaten out of them.

There _is_ an argument to be made as to whether the current edition should have been the 6th edition release, but this is where we are now. And I quite like 'em!

The universal rules are now properly sorted and I am finding Star Wars bits and pieces can use them very well. But then again, our games have been using similar universal rules (we tend to call them Traits) for years now :)

Should point out I am talking about the core rules rather than the Codexes – though I am quite enjoying those too. I even think the Grey Knights are a fine addition.

Pete: Absolutely mate, well said!

There could be a dozen different reasdons why 6e was only 2 years before being replaced, and very few have to do with "the rules suck." Personally I believe it was because GW is starting to notice they are going to run into revenue problems, and this was to shore up the bottom line for the time being.

Looks like a pretty cool project. Forget the naysayers. Despite the ridiculous 40k codex and rules prices I think it's a great idea. Using current edition 40k will let your friend's and others easily play your system since it's a game they're familiar with.

I would have gone even further and tried to use existing 40k codex unit listings. The "unbound" rules make this a much more widely acceptable proposition, and I'm sure there's enough statlines (probably in Eldar and IG codices) to represent most everyhing in the SW universe, though this would cross more copyright boundaries.

I ditched 40k in 6th so I can't haven't playtest your codex, but when it is finished I'd love to read the final document. Sounds like it's going to be quite beautiful. You shouldn't fear putting it out there. Lots of folks have made and published their own fan Dexes that are laid out exactly like GW and there's only a problem when you sell them. You can see some nice examples here:

Best of luck with the project!

Well when it comes to GW and their current rules you would be correct.

MongooseMatt, I also got started with 40K back in the Rogue Trader era – I.E. 1989.

But their constant trashing the rules and Nerfing the hell out of my Eldar Guardians were the final straw and I stop playing at the end of 3rd Edition.

Now all they want to do is sell players overpriced models and books.

$55 USD for Army books/Codex's is not worth buying when you have 6 armies (Dark Angels, Guardians of the Covenant, Eldar, Imperial Guard & Orks).

That would mean nearly $350 USD-$400 just to get the Codex's and supplements.

Sorry that is not something that I will be doing because those books are not worth that amount of money.

Patrick Sexton Supporting Member of TMP01 Oct 2014 2:49 p.m. PST

But why does his thread need to be a bully pulpit for your 40K trashing? It isn't like there aren't other anti-GW threads on TMP.

Just wonderin' aloud.

Mithmee01 Oct 2014 6:44 p.m. PST

So you are okay with spending nearly $500 USD just for books.

Like if you brought the 6th Edition book (nearly $90 USD) which didn't even last two years.

Or how about balance between all of the armies, which is non-existent and there has been any balance for nearly 15 years.

Yes I do bash & trash GW because they have ruin what once was a great game.

Oh and have stop supporting other games because of their idiotic ways.

Warhammer 40K EPIC comes to mind.

GW has driven all of their really good talented individuals away and it shows in their current rules and what they have done in the past few years.

chuck05 Fezian01 Oct 2014 7:38 p.m. PST

THats all well and good Mithme but the OP never asked what your opinion of GW was. He was asking for opinions on his idea.

Instead of hijacking the thread start your own.

Garand01 Oct 2014 9:21 p.m. PST

Indeed. So far a thread created to discuss a Star Wars 40K conversion has turned into a b%$^fest about GW…again.

Damon.

gianpippo02 Oct 2014 3:01 a.m. PST

It is an interesting project. Please keep us informed. Also some battle reports would be nice.
I also think that the thread should be a discussion about MoongoseMatt project and not about GW.

Zargon02 Oct 2014 5:15 a.m. PST

Hehehe.Mithmee stop poking the 'fan boys' bear its cruel fun but cruel rather ask if they can back roll their project to include reality 2nd-3rd ed rules as well. Then they really are doing a service. :)
Cheers

MongooseMatt02 Oct 2014 5:55 a.m. PST

GW-bashing aside, I have just done another small update, this one covering a problem I found with Rebel Troopers ( link ) .

ordinarybass02 Oct 2014 9:19 a.m. PST

Interesting update. It's all theory until they get on the battlefield, but you seem to be handling the balancing act between Rebels and Stormtroopers pretty well.

I'd hardly consider myself a 'fanboy'. Just wondering why Mithmee needs to jump on very 40K thread and turn it into a GW bashing fest.

Garand03 Oct 2014 10:36 a.m. PST

Indeed, it is because of stuff like this that I really am not interested in either showing off my GW stuff, discussing releases, or talking about discount strategies here on TMP.

alpha3six03 Oct 2014 11:36 a.m. PST

GW bashing fests outside of anti-GW threads get pretty tiresome, especially when all the GW players participating in those threads are perfectly aware of what the critics tout as superior alternatives and most likely play them extensively alongside Warhammer.

Plus I'm pretty sure no one on TMP is one of those mythical deluded kids who thinks that miniatures gaming and the Warhammer Hobby are one and the same – the type that GW critics seek to rescue from their own ignorance.

Centurio Prime06 Oct 2014 5:58 a.m. PST

MongooseMatt,

Good job… I like these rules, I may give them a try. I bought Blasters and Bulkheads to play around with my Star Wars miniatures, but for larger battles, this could be fun.

Capt Flash07 Oct 2014 5:09 a.m. PST

Keep at it MongooseMatt. I'd like to look through your final document, myself.
3rd Edition 40K is my preferred choice if I decide to use those rules for my 15mm sci fi project, or 6th edition, as I think the terrain rules for both of those versions suit 15s nicely.

UncleHank07 Oct 2014 10:12 a.m. PST

I've been using the Imperial Guard rules with a dip into Inquisition for Jedi. I'll have to give these a look though. Thanks for sharing!
