I am working on the Valley Campaign with the intention of playing several of the battles. Obviously Jackson's army captures a good quantity of Federal supplies and weapons mid campaign but what we're his infantry troops armed with specifically at 1st Kernstown? I have found a few sources, read a few books on this but was curious if anyone could help me narrow this down more. Thanks.

If Hunted Cow Studios have done their research, only the First Virginia Battalion and the 27th Virginia Volunteers had rifled muskets at Kernstown. All other regiments had smoothbore muskets. This information comes from the iPad game "Civil War 1862." They have a First Battle of Kernstown scenario. I'm sorry I could not find a more scholarly source. Ecelbarger's "We Are In For It" doesn't seem to make any mention of small arms.

At that stage of the war (first real battle of 1862 in the east) the Confederates have not yet captured large numbers of weapons and many of the Federals were also armed with smoothbores at that time anyway. So I'd expect a lot of smoothbores, but I don't have any hard numbers to back that up. Of course, the bulk of the fighting at 1st Kernstown took place amid the woods on Sandy Ridge at a pretty close range, so it probably didn't matter that much.

Howdy,

At McDowell (after Kernstown), it was certainly noted the Union tried to take advantage of the longer range available to them with RM. I agree with Scott's comment on the terrain for Kernstown, and its effect of combat ranges.

FYI, I will be running a Kernstown scenario at Fall-IN (Saturday, 7pm). This a playtest for a new V&B scenario book for the ACW; I aim to focus on the Valley and the Peninsula.

My two cents, I would not equip the CSA forces with RM until they defeat a significant Union force and seize their supplies. A tricky issue. I am currently doing a campaign game for the Valley.

Ponder on,

JAS

Thanks guys. This helps a good deal.

Ponder if I can break away and get up to fall-in I'll come by and check out your game. I'd like to see what you've put together.
