As I didn't like the way the last 3 VF-96 looked in the old scheme

picture

I have refreshed all them and added some extra detail to the rest of the VF-96 aircraft.

The VA-146 and VA-147 have had a play round as well. The next ones (two more VA-146 aircraft) will have the USS Constellation added above the NAVY now that I have the resolution on the printer sorted out to go down that small.

For those interested the Attack Aircraft are being redone as I make up three Air Wings (at the scale of 1 model = 1 Flight) for USS Constellation (1972), USS Kitty Hawk (1967/1968) and the Oriskany (1965/1966)

Those look great. Kevin

Chortle Fezian29 Sep 2014 4:30 a.m. PST

Those look fantastic. I have some 1/600th aircraft from the India/Pakistan wars. It is a very cute scale.

For some reason I have always loved the A6 intruder, so it is nice to see you are deploying them.

Are you playing any games with these?

Time to do the Jolly Rogers!

CAG 1929 Sep 2014 9:10 a.m. PST

Time to do the Jolly Rogers!

They only had the one Vietnam cruise in 1965 on the Independence so not really likely to include other than a "lets see what can I find" The Wavy "bones" does look cool though, a lot better than the full black tail they inherited later

darthfozzywig29 Sep 2014 9:36 a.m. PST

Very cool.

svsavory29 Sep 2014 9:52 a.m. PST

Impressive collection!

Hey – I'm not seeing any USS Ranger-deployed aircraft there (NE)!!!!!!

Ranger had the most tours out to 'Nam than any other carrier (eight), howzabout some "represent?"

(former USS Ranger MarDet)

Great detail for 1/600! Right on the inspiring/intimidating border. :-)

Are you using a marker for some of your thin black lines/borders?

taskforce5829 Sep 2014 12:39 p.m. PST

Very nice! Just curious – why the different shade of grey on the three VF-96 bird in the first pic?

CAG 1929 Sep 2014 12:40 p.m. PST

VF-96 wearing NG codes were on Ranger in early 65 are done as they were a Mig Killer but that was the only one so didn't appear on my list of possibles.

I do have a couple of A-6s with NE codes that could be pressed into use, need to find some interesting paint schemes from other squadrons to change my plan but I do like a challenge so wait out :)

All the lines and markings are decals which are home made

CAG 1929 Sep 2014 12:44 p.m. PST

@Taskforce58

When I first started doing USN Aircraft I couldn't find a grey i liked so went with something that looked about right. When I found out that VJ Deck Tan was a better colour I started a project to do all the USN MiG killers, but I didn't buy enough J model airframes so had left the "best" of the old J models in place as I couldn't bear trashing the work I had done earlier, until it started to grate on how out of place they looked

You might remember us discussing it last year

So the old ones in the first photo

5800
5749
7267

Were replaced by new paint jobs in the second photo plus extra markings on the ones already done

CAG 1929 Sep 2014 1:58 p.m. PST

So up for a challenge. USS Ranger air wing didn't have NE tail codes until after September 1967. NK codes could be interesting as I already have a Pukin Dog but on a different carrier so need some work. I also have the VF-142 aircraft. Does mean I need six more F-4B models though

HistoryPhD29 Sep 2014 3:03 p.m. PST

Still need those VA-176 Skyraiders from their Intrepid cruise!!

MacrossMartin29 Sep 2014 11:34 p.m. PST

Those ARE nice. I'm no fan of 1/600, but if I'd seen these before getting into air gaming, I might have been!

I'm guessing that the off-white/gull grey (pardon my lack of knowledge of USN colours) makes these little chaps easier to identify on the table, too.

Loving the decals you designed, too. But, where are the MiGs?

Mardaddy30 Sep 2014 3:01 p.m. PST

Macross, the MiG's have all been shot down!

Mako1130 Sep 2014 3:45 p.m. PST

Love the new look!

CAG 1901 Oct 2014 12:02 a.m. PST

The VJ Deck Tan really makes the markings and insignia stand out without having to resort to using white decal paper and feather in

Windward04 Oct 2014 8:52 p.m. PST

As usual excellent work Si
