Loved Land of the Lost as a kid. Now I shudder to think of it. And Lost in Space.

Cosmotiger21 Jan 2005 8:55 a.m. PST

Lupus Yonderboy:

"I used to watch this live action show as a kid on Nickelodeon about teenagers who were psychic. Sort of targeted young adults, British accents, made in the UK. ANyone know what I am talking about?"

I remember a show similar to what you describe called "The Tomorrow People." I watched it with my cousin on cable in about 1980-81. But I have no specific memories about it, other than it was British, and had Dr. Who-like special effects.

Jake B21 Jan 2005 8:58 a.m. PST

Lost Saucer!

Quark, Land of the Lost, Far Out Space Nuts, Salvage 1.

But I can't believe so many people missed the point of Space Rangers, which blended comedy and action pretty well. I didn't think the humor was really that far above the average viewer's head, but apparently it was. Somehow a lot of people thought it was trying to be dead serious and was only 'unintentionally funny.'

Jake B21 Jan 2005 9:40 a.m. PST

Actually, I bet a lot of people disliked Space Rangers for the same reason I didn't like Wizards and Warriors - I thought the time was right for a serious, gritty fantasy series and thought that was what I was getting until the jokes started. Hercules + Xena pulled off the comedy-drama blend better and became hits.

Salvage 1 and Quark...:D

The original "Land of the Lost" was great! Spent hours dreaming of how to make a Sleestak suit! Taught myself Pakuni! The series went a little downhill a little when the father opted out and the uncle came, but I ate it raw anyways!

There's been a new "Land of the Lost" series made based on the original. Saw one episode during a visit to the States, the visit was great, the new series sucked!

mweaver21 Jan 2005 9:51 a.m. PST

There are far more bad SciFi shows in our past then I had realized...

jeffrsonk21 Jan 2005 9:54 a.m. PST

Oh, it has to be "Space Rangers." I loved that show, all 4 episodes of it. The scene where the guy pulls out his artificial heart and beats on it with a hammer to get it started was just hilarious.

Marquis21 Jan 2005 11:25 a.m. PST

Thunderhawks!!!!!!!

Loved that show, especially the Sargent Major Ball Droid thing.

MegatronUK21 Jan 2005 11:33 a.m. PST

The Tripods.... (BBC series based on of the books of the same name) actually i've just picked up the entire series and its still remarkably creepy

Afrikakorps21 Jan 2005 11:33 a.m. PST

The Star Lost, gee i thought i was the only one to recall that one....used biospheres as a viable setting/plot change from week to week.Akin to a star trek holo-room series.

"I used to watch this live action show as a kid on Nickelodeon..."

God I'm getting old.

Anyone else remember "It's About Time" ?

Two astronauts travel back in time and meet a pre-historic family. Half way through the first season the network tries to bolster rating by bringing them all back to the '60s. Lasted all of one season.

WaltOHara21 Jan 2005 12:10 p.m. PST

That one that had the family lost in the Bermuda Triangle.. late 70s drek.

DyeHard21 Jan 2005 12:25 p.m. PST

Not only do I remember "It's About Time", I can sing the theme song.

"The Tomorrow People" is the Sci/Fi show that makes me the most mad I have ever got at TV. There is an episode were Hitler turns out to be an alien set to earth to turn us agaist ourselves. This stuck me as Holocaust denial. (I was very political in those days). I still think it cheepens one of the most inportent points of history. I still hate that show!

It's about time, it's about space,
About two men in the strangest place.

gloriousbattle21 Jan 2005 12:55 p.m. PST

Also, I'm surprised nobody mentioned Dark Shadows, the horror soap-opera. Granted, its not really SF, but Jonathan Frid as Barnabus Collins was really great.

How that many monsters were running around in the little town of Collinsport without attracting notice always got to me.

They probably outnumbered the human population...

gloriousbattle21 Jan 2005 12:56 p.m. PST

Also, remember the Lost in Space episode where the villain was a giant carrot?

Truly magnificent TV.

MahanMan21 Jan 2005 1:21 p.m. PST

Topkick asked" "I don't know the name of it but there was a show I saw on scifi awhile back about a family that ended up in a dimension/world that was oppressive and they had to follow the symbol of the all seeing eye to get back to their own home world.

In one episode the kids - a curly haired guy and a hot blonde both late teens introduced the youth of the world to rock and roll and in another the boy flunked out fo school and got drafted into the very army that was hunting him and his family.

Anyone else remeber anything especially the title of this turkey?"

I believe you are looking for OTHERWORLD, you poor, poor man... :]

rmaker21 Jan 2005 2:01 p.m. PST

"You haven't seen bad scifi if you missed 1970's children's shows here in the US..."

And those were good compared to the '50's stuff. Rocky Jones, anyone? Or Captain Midnight?

"Also, I'm surprised nobody mentioned Dark Shadows, the horror soap-opera. Granted, its not really SF"

It's got time travel - SF by definition.

gloriousbattle21 Jan 2005 4:38 p.m. PST

Ah! Rocky Jones. and his sidekick Winky.

Now THAT was fertile ground for MST3K.

I thoroughly enjoyed Space:Above and Beyond; never really thought of it as "baaad". Good sometimes, okay others.

Indistinguishable from White Wolf's World of Darkness setting then? :)

Dark Shadows is possibly the only TV series to have a H P Lovecraft subplot. One arc was a blatant "Dunwich Horror" ripoff. I loved Angelique, and Kate Jackson got her start there.

Sargonarhes21 Jan 2005 7:00 p.m. PST

Hmmm....

I liked "Space Rangers" and "Space: Above & Beyond", maybe they needed some work but I didn't think they were that horrible. How about the JMS experiment for kids saturday morning "The Hypernauts"

I liked the older "UFO", "Space 1999", How about the animated "Flash Gordon"? Ming had an army of robots that'd get vaporized with lots of reused animation. But it was still cool to watch.

ARK II (1976)...It had the high tech truck (from Damnation Alley?) and came off as a goofy pro-science save the earth show.

tvtome.com/ArkII

"For millions of years earth was fertile and rich. Then polution and waste began to take their toll. Civilization fell into ruin. This is the world of the 25th century. Only a handful of scientists remain. Men, who have vowed to rebuild what has been destroyed...This is their achievement...Ark II, a mobile storehouse of scientific knowledge, manned by a highly trained crew of young people. Their mission: to bring the hope of a new future to mankind. Ark II log, entry #1 - I Jonah, Ruth, Samuel and Adam are fully aware of the dangers we face as we venture into unknown, maybe even hostile areas. But, we're determined to bring the promise of a new civilization to our people and our planet."

As a kid I really like it.

Man was it bad...

......... twitch....... twitch........

And to those who said B-5 :-P to you! This is for BAD Sci-Fi. There has to be something considered good!

As for Buck Rogers... anything with Erin Gray has to be considered at least tolerable! Just turn the sound off!

I know, I am not joking...... just showing my age! Bad 70s Sci-Fi ruined me for years!

@ A.R.Garbee... Man, Ark II. That brings back some memories. I loved that show as a kid. And, what are the chances that the whole crew, including the talking chimp, would have Old Testament biblical names? I remember one episode featured the debut of the "new" Robby the Robot.

It seems like only the guy who played Jonah had much of a career. I see that he died in '03; 53 is a pretty young age to go. I thought the girl who played Ruth was pretty hot. Even looking at that photo today, almost 30 years later, she still looks pretty cute. BTW, Ark II and the Landmaster from Damnation Alley are not the same vehicles. I *think* Ark II got recycled (or at least it's design did) as the full sized mock up of the Seeker for Space Academy the next year. It was done by the same production house (Filmation) and was on the same network (CBS).

Speaking of Space Academy... dopey show yes, but Jonathan Harris was the Commander! Then there was the spin off of THAT show, Jason of Star Command. James Doohan played the Commander in that. And who could forget perpetual movie heavy Sid Haig as the Evil Galactic Emperor... uh... um... Whatizname! (I guess *I* can forget)

Mlatch22122 Jan 2005 2:50 a.m. PST

OK, and moving forward a few years and away from live action Saturday morning shows....

Buck Rogers, man that show just gets better (as in goofier, campier) as time goes on. The first season is good for few chuckles but the second season is freakin' laugh out loud, painfully funny.

The "Hawkman" character was hilarious! What are the chances of encountering an alien humanoid/avianoid hybrid actually named "Hawkman"? And what about the way they conveniently write off the fact that he's a crazed murderer bent on some hate-fueled revenge campaign against humanity? "Oh sorry about that. Won't happen again. Sure, I'd LOVE to join your merry band of travellers. I mean, since I accidentally killed my mate while attacking Buck's ship, there's really nothing for me here now." "Yes, just me, Hawkman, the um, hawkman and my new-found, HUMAN friends.... Humans, who until just now, I spent my life hating and killing. Yes, my new friends. All of us, locked up nice and secure in the close confines of a starship... heading into unknown regions of the galaxy... all alone... far from any immediate help if anything, say 'goes wrong'." "Oh, Buck, a couple of questions. One, where's the armory? Two, you got any booze stashed away on this ship?" LOL

Man, season three could've been so much fun, if maybe a bit brief!

alien BLOODY HELL surfer22 Jan 2005 4:28 a.m. PST

what was that Aussie show where all the adults had died and only kids/teens remained(shudders at the idea)? Tribes or something, wheres that bloody crim procopious(spelling - used to be SS Nimrod) when you need him?

Steve Hazuka22 Jan 2005 7:10 a.m. PST

What was the submarine show with Roy Schider (sp) that went futuristic with another talking Dolphin and a whiz kid? Was it SeaQuest or something. Didn't the submarine become a space ship later on?

Neotacha22 Jan 2005 11:25 a.m. PST

Hope for the future of mankind with one female and 3 males?

Rather a small gene pool to draw from, isn't it? So where's the hope?

Gergle22 Jan 2005 11:34 a.m. PST

Salvage 1

Yes, it was bad, I know it couldn't have worked, but... I like the thought that it could have! :-)

I disagree about Bab 5, I thought it was very well done, one of the most intellignet SF series ever.

I remember the first attempt at something like that. Long before the Vampire RPG, GURPS Horror had a little aside about something called the "Cabal" which it defined as a "monster illuminati" that was actually running the world.

I always imagined there would be ads in the local paper:

"Manservant needed. 3rd Shift, excellent pay. Apply in person at 1313 Arkham Alley. Humans need not respond."

The other two guys better "hope" that I don't have a gun or even a wrench handy...

Mlatch22122 Jan 2005 4:31 p.m. PST

@ Neotacha: If you were referring to Ark II, one of those males was a talking chimp! Fortunately, the show wasn't quite *that* dumb... they weren't some travelling baby factory. The premise was that these people were sort of scientific missonaries. Human society had regressed to a mostly pre-technological state but hadn't lost the ability to breed.

@ Tabletopwarrior: Yep, that was Seaquest. Supposedly, the actor who played the Wiz Kid blamed the show for destroying his career. He claimed that this lead him to suffer from serious depression. Sadly, he wasn't kidding because he ultimately commited suicide.

I sincerely hope that's an urban legend. If not, and this is what REALLY led him to commit suicide, well the gene pool needed culling anyway.

Sorry to be callous, but anybody who commits suicide because he only gets a role in ONE TV series?

Gimme a break.

Mlatch22122 Jan 2005 7:37 p.m. PST

Gloriousbattle:

I went to try and research the source of this story. I found that the actor's name was Jonathan Brandis and that he did, in fact, commit suicide in November '03 at the age of 27. I had no luck finding the source for the speculation that he'd ended his life due to depression over a failing career. I believe it may have been a story I saw on CNN or E or read in People. It's also possible that I may have confused him with someone else. It looked to me like he had contiuned to work steadily. Most of the articles archived at news sites that I could access were short and to the point. Many of the fan sites simply echoed the news articles but with the added caveat of "It's no use to speculate... etc, etc". After wading through several fawning, mildly obsessive fan/tribute/memorial sites, I just gave up. Those sites just give me the creeps!

Covert Walrus22 Jan 2005 9:47 p.m. PST

aliensurfer: HOW DARE YOU! Tribes, for all that it was crap, was filmed in Wellington, New Zealand. That mall looks exactly like that on a Sunday after 4:00Pm.....

Mlatch221:Johnathon Brandis committed suicide? Wow, news to me. Friend of mine refers to him as the Anti-Crusher, because you actually liked him and he often solved things without making them worse first. I do in fact remember seeing him in at least a half dozen other roles, though, so it's hard to believe that SeaQuest did him in. Mind you, the ex-Breakfast Club guy wgho killed himself did that while his show was at the top of its ratings, and thanks to that, "Suddenly Susan" ended up destroyed. Suddenly:).

alien BLOODY HELL surfer22 Jan 2005 10:13 p.m. PST

Covert - apologies - best I don't mention what my Aussie mates tell me the 'kiwis' are doing instead of being at the mall - but it's similar to what the English accuse the Welsh of being. There was no offence meant - the kids used to watch it and I could never fathom out what was supposed to of happened - or how it all ended - anyone know? Please?

Plynkes23 Jan 2005 4:03 a.m. PST

Wasn't it called "The Tribe", rather than "Tribes"?

Wasn't there some virus or something that only killed grown-ups, leaving a world-wide "Lord of the Flies" situation?

Can't say I cared for it.

funny that i run across this board ... here i am searching for a short lived SI-FI show i remember as a kid, maybe one of you can help me out.
All i can remember aboutt he show was the space ships they almost looked like the ships that luke skywaker used in StarWars.... there guys would blast off from earth or the moon even and intercept the "bad guys" blowing them outa the sky... Interceptors ? or something like that?

as to fav god or bad shows, you all have names just about everything i loved to watch, land of the lost, Bab 5, dark shadows. never missed an episode, the list goes on..ect..... name it i loved to watch it.. how about a few bad but good movies?? robojoxs, robo warriors, arena, robo wars, lol i'm glad their redoing a lot of the stuff we used to watch as kids, not only does it bring back memories, but now my son even likes a lot of the origanl stuff i used to watch as a kid. lol he thinks their cool

Nif646 I believe you're thinking of Gerry Anderson's "UFO." It had a moon base, ladies with purple hair and large mammary glands, aliens that seemed fixated on a profitless series of attacks on Earth, an over the top American Colonel running the place, ladies with purple hair skin-tight metal suits and very large mammary glands...etc. Just another saturday night memory I'll never share with my therapist.
