A brief post to

1) explain why I haven't been blogging for ages!

2) describe why my preference is for 4th edition Warhammer Fantasy rather the a the 'traditional' old-school choice of 3rd.

A bit of a random read, but there you go!

Thanks
Chris

Well written :-) My preference for WFB 3rd edition is that I purchased and painted a full Slann army the year before 4th was released… Slann and Squats, never forget!

Thanks, punkrabbit! I can understand your preference! I've never seen a Slann figure in real life! I'm currently working out how to get some kind of Norse army to work in 4th Ed. I'm using the Norse mercenary list in 3rd as a bit of a guide!

Always thought of them as two different games really. Both are good depending on how you want to spend your time.

I think a lot of the animus is caused by the the abrupt change and the "official" nature of such.

Had fourth been a supplement "Fasthammer" or something that may well have been different…or not. Hobby folk are hard to please :)

1992 was a tough year for all of us Slann and Squat owners. It was the year GW went from anointed chosen one to Arch Enemy. It took over a decade (~16 years) for me to come back and buy anything from them again.

congrats on the baby boy.
I was always a Wood Elf player, and loved the late eighties figures like Skarloc, which are all 3rd ed era. As a player though 4th was like a massive steroid laden booster to that army list.

Bob: I think you are spot on there about thinking of them as two different games. I haven't played any of the other editions, but my feeling from flicking through the books is that 3rd to 4th was by far the biggest change.

CorpCommander: do you still play 3rd with your Slann? I can certainly see the upset the change would cause when while armies are wiped out. One of the big positives of the general Oldhammer movement, I think, is a shift towards people openly talking about playing games with whatever edition they want instead of feeling obliged to only use the latest. Here's hoping your Slann will fight again if you still have them!

McWong: Thanks for the congrats. There were so many fantastic figures from the 3rd edition era. It is true that a lot had more personality than later ones.
