Glorious Legion 4! Nothing makes me happier than phalanxes of axe-armed and deranged sociopaths with delusions of invincibility, even if they are green and Orcy. Nice paint job, you have great patience painting 6mm figures in detail.
Cheers.

Dear Legion 4

Not criticizing you old bean. My point was simply that some topics (here, everywhere) are advanced as "stalking horses." The poster or interlocutor advances a position. He really doesn't want to talk about position A but he wants to say position B. This always fails as everyone can see it's a stalking horse, and starts beating it, because THEY want to talk about B also. But neither can really talk about it because if they do bring up "B" everyone will rise up in righteous indignation and condemnation and say "I was NEVER talking about that!" or "I didn't mean to suggest that!" or "You're putting words in my mouth." (When actually, in fact, you are dragging the words that are in their mouth out Out) So the argument continues with the stalking horse now (as in the Wizard of Oz) "Really most sincerely dead" and the only thing you can do is keep beating on it, because to talk about everyone really wants to is the "nuclear option" and will of course result in "Mutually Assured Dawghousing" stifling, ignoring, and probably some voodoo rituals at the home besides.

At this point the stalking horse morphs into "The Tar Baby" and everyone gets stuck and there's no end to it and you're mired into it for oh-800 posts or so.

You cannot talk about matters that are going on right now where we have a dog in the fight dispassionately.

Luckily the world is filled with stalking horses.

OSchmidt:
Sorry to butt in on your conversation but you lost me in your description of stalking horses and threads which go out of control and go on and on. What is wrong with someone posting a proposition in the hopes that others will debate the issue? Sure, you might get polarity around "point A" and "point B" but might you also get some imaginative posters who post points C, D, E, F, etc.; and in doing so provoke thought and reasoned response to novel or imaginative ideas? Where is the harm in that? So what if a thread extends out 800+ posts and most people become entrenched in their position. There may be a small number of posters with really good ideas in among the run-of-the-mill posts and it's those diamonds which make the whole exercise worth it.
We wargamers tend to be a cantankerous and oppositional bunch, but very many are also really smart people with very good ideas which I and others can learn from. With such a wealth of learning and experience out there it seems almost a waste to let such opportunities pass us by.
Why can't a person maintain some objectivity if their nation or state is involved in an on-going conflict? Loyalty to a state does not mean blind obedience. Loyalty means acting in the best interests of your state and each citizen may have a different idea of what that is. If you agree with what is done make your case. If you disagree make your different case. If we all just talked more or gamed more, maybe we could better understand each other and lower the chance of having to kill each other on future battlefields. To me it is a win-win situation when fellowship, games, talk and debate can stand up against nationalism, tribalism and intimidation by either states or their foes. Talk and dice seem a better way to go then fighting over things we cannot hope to control. Maybe I'm just naive but I can hope and I will hope that we can find our better natures through fair gaming, discourse and debate.

I see your "horse feathers" and raise you the ever rare and valuable "eohippus down". La!

I thought Dawn Horse Has Fallen was a better movie than Eohippus Down.

Didn't think you were "O" … And yes, the conversation has gotten a bit off track … But in many cases, the comments were very amusing and I even posted a silly pic ! So at this point, it's all pretty much good … No harm … no foul …
