After having played at my club the battle of Leignitz, this time we simulated the battle of Mohi. link Mongols won both. |

This battle was featured in a recent issue of Miniature Wargames. The author claims the Hungarian didn't use light cavalry at this time and no mention is made of Szekelers. Most DBM and FOG army lists have them as an available troop. Is there any record of Szekelers at this battle and would they be more likely be bow armed Cavalry? |

I am the author of both series of articles on the Mongols in MWBG and in my lengthy research of the whole of the European Campaign, I have been unable to find a single reference to any Cumani fighting at Mohi. Over a period of time, most of the south-east of Hungary had been settled by Saxons and Szekelers at the request of the current monarch in return for a certain amount of military service and the building of fortified places against invasions from that route. At the time of Mohi most of these now indigenous peoples had either been caught by the Mongol leaders Subedai Bahadur and Prince Kuyuk in their whirlwind advance through Transylvania, or afterwards, were engaged in defending their own lands from the vengeful Cumani who were getting out of Hungary by travelling the same route as the Mongols only in the opposite direction. This is why they were either not at Mohi or present in such small numbers as to have not been recorded. I don't use DBM or FOG so I don't know the period they cover. I can only assume they are in the lists because the Hungarians used them either earlier or later than the Mongol Invasion. |

Thank you IanB3406, I'm glad you enjoyed them. For some obscure reason that I cannot explain -and believe me I have thought about it a lot- it is my favourite period in history. |

Thanks for the comments and the critics. I have managed the hungarian order of battle to allow four players, that with the DBMM army list is currently allowed just with a cuman allied corps. A typical case where the simulation is less important than playbility. When in my club we play these kind of historical battles there are always more players than slots. |
