THE ENCYCLODEPIA OF FRENCH TANKS
and Armoured Vehicles 1914-1940
François Vauvillier

The tank, a weapon which would revolutionize warfare, was created in France almost exactly at the same time as in Britain, to meet the same tactical need. And even before the first tanks were built, it was in France, at the turn of the 20th Century, that the very first proper machinegun car with partial armour appeared. This complete illustrated directory details 100 main French armoured fighting vehicles (tanks and armoured cars) plus 285 variants (personnel carriers, bridgelayers, mine-clearing tanks etc) as well as prototypes and projects, offering a comprehensive coverage of all French armoured vehicles from before the Great War to the Blitzkrieg period. The text accompanying the illustrations is concise and informative, the various lines of AFV development are laid out as Genealogic Tables, data fi les describe in detail each main type, and this directory is richly illustrated with rare contemporary photos, plus a wealth of colour profiles published to a constant scale, together forming the ultimate reference work on the subject.

Great stuff! It does cost about $50 USD though. Probably worth it though.

It looks like a good resource.

deephorse18 Sep 2014 3:46 p.m. PST

My copy arrived a couple of days ago and what a book it is. So many vehicles that I never knew existed, and some downright wierd stuff too. It's a quality publication in every sense, paper, photos, illustrations, content. Buy it, you'll be glad you did.

lou passejaire18 Sep 2014 3:46 p.m. PST

a bit pricey, indeed but, as "l'automobile sous l'uniforme" from the same author, it's the ultimate ressource

ArmymenRGreat18 Sep 2014 4:39 p.m. PST

I bought a book from this publisher before they started printing anything in English. Bought it for the pictures and quality alone. This one you can even read!

A tremendous book, highly recommended.

I just wish there was a comparable book on British AFVs…..

deephorse19 Sep 2014 7:59 a.m. PST

I second that.

Considering the diversity of British armoured vehicles, you would probably need three or four volumes to cover them all.

deephorse20 Sep 2014 6:27 a.m. PST

If they were as good as this I'd buy them all.

Tarleton20 Sep 2014 9:16 a.m. PST

I'll second that…………

lou passejaire21 Sep 2014 6:52 a.m. PST

i was dreaming of a reprinting of "l'automobile sous l'uniforme" but no reprinting in view, it seem's that the editor and author will try, with time to produce an "encyclopedia of the french army 1914-1940" of witch "THE ENCYCLODEPIA OF FRENCH TANKS and Armoured Vehicles 1914-1940" is the first book .
And it's a giant task .

"Considering the diversity of British armoured vehicles, you would probably need three or four volumes to cover them all."

Well, I have the series of three: 'Mechanised Force', 'The Great Tank Scandal' and 'The Universal Tank', but of course they only really cover the late 1920s until the mid 1940s.

I had a flick through one in the Ian Allen books shop in Manchester. Looks excellent and has info on the not so well known vehicles as well.

There are a few colour plates in it to the usual High standard as we expect from Histoire and Collections but I don't think it has been designed as an armoured colour cam reference book . If this is what you are looking for then other books including those from H & C may be a better buy for this purpose.

lou passejaire27 Sep 2014 2:45 a.m. PST

Mysteron , for french camo , you have the excellent "Peinture de guerre Un siècle de camouflages de l'armée Française" ( subtitle : Camos of the french AVS ) from Pascal DANJOU – Thomas SEIGNON ( half text in english )

avaible here : minitracks.fr/camouflage.htm

mysteron Supporting Member of TMP29 Sep 2014 5:10 a.m. PST

Thanks for the link for the camo book. However I have already decided that my French tanks will be painted in the simple Green and Earth Camo scheme . I am too much of a chicken to try some of those more exotic camo schemes the French used :)

Just got it from Amazon for $41 USD and free delivery. GREAT book!

Mobius29 Sep 2014 7:38 a.m. PST

I got a copy. Not Like.

I was hoping to find something like the 'Encyclopedia of German' tanks but for French. With armor values and angles for different facings and areas. At most get 'Armour:40mm maximum'.
A lot of pictures and color scheme illustrations but no blueprint diagrams.

ptdockyard07 Oct 2014 5:58 p.m. PST

Mine just arrived and it is fantastic. There are a lot of vehicles in here, a LOT, that I have not seen or heard of anywhere. This after getting about a dozen sources on French armor and a trove of Blindés & Matériel issues. Is it rich with armor details- no. Do all have 3 views- no. Is this a huge value- considering I could have bought the two Osprey books and maybe one other for the price- YES

BlackWidowPilot Fezian07 Oct 2014 10:26 p.m. PST

I got mine and I have been pouring over it intensively ever since! What a treasure trove both for the visual information, technical information, production and deployment information of rare and interesting topics such as armored radio command vehicles, and the color plates!!! ARRGHH!!! I have to both repaint a bunch of my French tanks, I have to order a bunch more just to have an excuse to paint some of those simply outrageous and wonderful ten color camouflage schemes! evil grin

Worth every last Sous, I tells ya!!evil grin

I got mine for my birthday on Monday. Great stuff, just what I was after – a comprehensive survey of the development of French AFVs. Complements my David Fletcher books on British AFVs nicely.

lou passejaire08 Oct 2014 8:24 a.m. PST

It's a complement to "l'automobile sous l'uniforme" long out of print .
I still wait for a reprint .
