RECRUITS 2014 REVIEW:
I attended Recruits 2014 in Less Summit Missouri (in Kansas City). It is a 4 hour drive each way from Tulsa, OK.
Summary really well put on convention highly recommended for gamers/dealers in the region.
Recruits Convention Fee
Entry fee $5.00 USD pp for entire weekend. (including vendors & game masters funds go to support the school).
Con times: Fri from 5pm to Sunday 1pm.
Hotels
Several in the area set up with rates for the Con.
Super 8 just 2 minutes drive was $58 USD/night for double queen + tax $138 USD for 2 nights all in. There is also a Perkins restaurant and an Aldi supermarket in same parking lot as hotel.
World War I Museum in Kansas city can be tagged on to the convention weekend.
Facility
The Lee Summit High School Gym & Cafeteria was really good in as much as the a/c was excellent as was the lighting.
They use the Gym for dealers and all games except the tournaments which are in the cafeteria below. Dealers around the edge of the gym and tables in the middle.
The floor being wood (covered with a tarp) was softer on the feet and sound was not an issue either as the high ceiling and acoustically well made too.
Restrooms clean and plentiful.
It would be great to see more conventions linked to High Schools as the facilities are great for moderate sized conventions and there are no minimum room nights' etc. Proceeds do go to the school , which is great.
Concession stand
This was run by convention organizers with fair pricing (soda $1 USD/can) for example.
PARKING:
Free in HS parking lot
Parking easy and I stayed at the nearby Super 8 $58 USD/night double queen room with fridge, microwave, coffee maker and (limited choices) included breakfast but sufficient.
DEALERS:
There were a good number of dealers for this sized convention. With a variety of gaming related goods. I don't believe they charge for dealer tables at this time either so the $5 USD entry fee is very affordable.
Those individuals with a lot of gaming stuff to sell can also take a dealers table in the main gym if they wish to staff it through the day/weekend.
GAMES:
For a smaller con there were a lot of games going on many historical some fantasy/Sci Fi land, air, sea games, plus Axis and Allies, DBA & Warhammer 40K tournaments. Plus open gaming tables.
Some good terrain, some basic, but games all well attended and well run that I saw. The convention is designed to help introduce children/teens into gaming and there were a lot of sons/fathers in attendance.
Flea Market Tables:
Again provided free of charge throughout the convention as long as one wants to staff the table.
Silent Auction:
Very popular event put anything out you want to sell with a minimum bid and others write in their bids on the sheet up to a timed end. Many many items for sale many sold. There is a 10% fee on sold items that goes to the school.
PLAN TO ATTEND IN 2015!
