Hi all,

So I'm kinda new to wargaming, started out in January this year, and I want to add some Stugs to my German division. I would like some detail as to the tank itself, and would like Schurzen to hide the poorly done tracks…

Thanks,

MU7

Are you asking who makes them?

MiniatureUnited710 Sep 2014 9:40 p.m. PST

Yes, I'm sorry for the confusion I would like your recommendations.

My 1/72nd scale Stugs are mainly Armorfast quick build ones. They aren't the greatest models in the world but they are cheap, easy to put together and look OK. You'll need to make the Schurzen yourself though, just a couple of bits of card stuck to the sides.

Cant beat that for price and quality for 20mm Stuggies!

PiersBrand, I think the Armorfast Stugs are way cheaper.

And quality is in the eye of the beholder.

There are also these;

or these, a few scattered in the list;

Ready To Roll do one (on a resin base),

Minimi do an early one (on a resin base),

MMS do some, link is to the F;

Milicast do a wide variety;

Britannia from Grubby Tanks do a couple;

Plenty of choice all round in resin, resin + metal bits, metal and plastic kits (apart from the easy/quick builds.

I like the Armourfast ones – assemble quick and paint up pretty good

Martin Rapier11 Sep 2014 5:46 a.m. PST

I forgot PSC do 1/72nd scale Stugs. The 15mm ones are things of beauty, so I imagine more than adequate in 20mm compared to the clunky Armorfast ones.

"PiersBrand, I think the Armorfast Stugs are way cheaper.

The OP didn't ask for the cheapest, just for suggestions, which Piers gave (and I would heartily second). Why do you want to make an argument out of this?

I don't think you can go wrong with any of the choices. I prefer ease of assembly of "most realistic" looking. Britannia and S&S (and others I can't think of at the moment)might have resin stugs.

Lonkka1Actual,

You may have misunderstood my rational, allow to explain properly, my apologies.

I never said they were cheaper than Armourfast… I suggested they were the best Iin terms of quality for the price.

Armourfast are around £4.00 GBP each, very cheap, but for fast builds, I like more detail and options available in the kit. So for the extra pound, you get more options and detail without going up to the price of Revell or Dragon, or indeed the complexity of those brands, which may not suit a gamer or someone new to modelling.

Happily, they are different production versions. The Armourfast model seems to be an Alkett Stug with welded frontal armor and a front to back loader hatch. The PSC model is a MIAG Stug with bolted frontal armor and a left to right opening loader's hatch.

Thus in my view (and I can only offer my view of 20mm models), for the PSC price, you "cant beat that for price and quality". But then I paint the PSC display stuff, so very positive about their models.

People should be happy to have so many offerings from so many excellent firms, truly showing what a vibrant genre 20mm WW2 is.

We at 20mmZone make a range of Stuggs ( Resin hull, metal tracks, fast build )with the option of side skirts than can be purchased seperatly if you prefere another make of kit? I at Shellhole also do them in all metal. One of the MDF guy's ( May be war bases) also sells them in pairs.

I'm based in the US, so I cannot reallky get PSC and armourfast…
I do like the challenged of 200+ piece kits though…

Thanks,
MU7

Then go for Dragon, the StuGs are superb!

Martin Rapier12 Sep 2014 1:59 a.m. PST

"WRT Armourfast, Martin, the entry from the Armourfast caalogue seems to indicate skirts?"

That is interesting, perhaps the model has been updated. Mine didn't come with any or I would have fitted them!

Just building a Dragon Tiger I in 1/72 nd myself, first time with this scale of Dragon kit (normally stick to 35th) and its a bit of a sod in places so if you like the building part you'll enjoy the kits. Recommend the uhu 'shoe' repair adhesive if the kits have rubber tracks, works a treat in gluing them together.

Both Armourfast and PSC can be ordered directly from their respective web sites, however I order almost everything from ebay sellers or Amazon(I live in rural VA); oddly enough shipping from the UK is sometimes cheaper than US domestic postage!

@MU7, order the PSC stuff from The War Store if you don't have a local game store. PSC is carried by Alliance and/or ACD distributors, so they're relatively easy to get (Hobbytown USA or Hobby Lobby may also be able to get them). Maybe special order instead of stock on-hand.

You could buy the Dragon or Revell kits, but those will have lots more parts than PSC for lots more money. And those parts will be more brittle, too.

MU7,

Where are you located? Out here in the Bay Area our local FLGS chain stocks PSC…

Yes our Stugs now have skirts. If any of you guys would like some to add to your kits, please e-mail your postal address and I'll get them off to you.

The modern kits for Dragon are supplied with tracks that can be glued with normal polly cement .

My Stugs represent a late war ( Normandy and beyond)unit and I have a mixture of PSC ( A great quick build IMO) Revell ( very nice model ) and Dragon ( beautiful models albeit expensive) . Two of them are Dragon readybuilts that I picked up at a show for £5.00 GBP each .

What I am saying here you needn't stick with one manufacturer. 20mm is the best scale for mixing.
