Can anyone suggest a good starter source for New World Spanish, Portugese, English and Carib natives ?

Something general will be good enough – maybe an Osprey or two ?

TIA

What era? Piracy in the West Indies covers a huge time range (well over two centuries). And why no French?

ERA ? Early stuff pre English civil war.

Why no French ? Because I can't work on more than 4 armies at a time !

If you're going to do the Caribbean, the French would be more in evidence than the Portuguese as it was outside of the latter's sphere of influence. They pretty much stayed in Brazil. And Africa, of course.

The French fought the Portuguese over Sao Luis in Northern Brasil. Also the Dutch were greatly involved in the Caribbean and tried to take control of all of Northern Brasil from the Portuguese in the 1620s and 30s. The Dutch controlled Suriname and a couple of islands in the Caribbean.

Osprey also does a book on the Portuguese.

If in 15mm – Grumpy (carried by ERM and Eureka) does some nice Portuguese, while Khurasan makes nice Early Colonial Spanish. In 25mm I would go with Eureka for the Portuguese.
