I wonder how many of those "last words" were written by pious monks and hagiographers 200 years after they died.

I would suppose that the most common last words in the Middle Ages were probably…

1: "GAK!" (or a reasonable sounding thereof), as a sharp pointy thing went into their innards…

2: "AAAAHHHH!!!" (or a reasonable sounding thereof), as something hot and boiling, or hot and burning, or just plain hot was applied to them with prejudice…

3: Some form of groaning and snivelling just before something sharp edged or pointed was applied to them….

4: A long "gurrrrrrrrrrrrglllle…" as something inside of them rotten with sickness decided to call it quits…
