My first real toy soldiers were the fabulous Marx Blue and Gray sets. Nothing has ever knocked them out of first place as far as my collection goes. If you were a kid in the sixties and you had one of these sets, you know exactly what I am talking about. Well, Playset Magazine has produced an hour long video showing off these wonderful toys in all of their glory. Display boards and dioramas are shown with all kinds of great information about the history of the Blue and Gray. I got it yesterday and have already watched it 3 times. link Here's the link. Check it out. It's well worth it. |

Man, I still have that square cardboard record, the Rebel yell was great. |

I had the Marx Alamo playset. Wonderful thing, that. My ACW playsets were the IDEAL sets with the "ringhand" figures with separate muskets, swords, cartridge boxes, caps, etc. Neat stuff. I still have a few of them and some odd bits, like a wall tent and cannon. The cannons also were spring loaded and fired blue or grey plastic balls about the size of a BB. Lost most of them within the first week of getting the set(s). |

TK Those are MPC, not Ideal. |

YES! MPC. You are quite correct in that. I would ask to be excused over age but I really ought to remember who made those wonderful sets I was given. Thanks for the correction. V/R |

My era was a bit after that and I had the metal suitcase Fort Apache and ancients castle sets. Those were the days. |

The suitcase sets also came in Boot Camp and Cape Kennedy forms. The "vertical" sets such as Navarone, Iwo Jima, Ambush at Falling Rock/Apache Pass, etc. are still my personal favorites. I'm also partial to the small cereal box sets (Bravo Squad, Red River Gang, etc.) that came at the end of the Marx era. |

Circa 1963 I had a brilliant Fort Apache (or possibly fort Cheyenne)with painted hard plastic cavalry/Indians/wagon/cannon and various goodies. Somewhere I also still have a set of about six or seven similar Union soldiers in a clear plastic box. Does anyone collect these things? They've sat in drawers for fifty years which seems a shame. |
