Never heard of this until today, thanks to reddit/r/todayilearned. link The relevant WWII part.
The condition was widespread in the United States Army during World War II. More than eighty thousand soldiers having the condition required hospitalization;the average length of these wartime hospital stays was 55 days. The condition was termed "jeep seat" or "Jeep riders' disease", because a large portion of people who were being hospitalized for it rode in Jeeps, and prolonged rides in the bumpy vehicles were believed to have caused the condition due to irritation and pressure on the coccyx. 80K+ casualties, with an average hospital stay of 55 days! What an amazing war. |

Still exists, and having treated a number of people with it in my young and foolish days it is still a (literal) pain the butt to treat |

I remember riding in/driving jeeps in the pre-HMWWV days. Yeah, they weren't particularly comfy! |

Motor vehicles generally are responsible for a large number of casualties in both wartime and peacetime. |

If riding in a WWII Jeep was anything like riding in an M151 Mutt, I can fully understand. |

Still recovering from one myself, actually. Not a pleasant experience. |
