Hey guys, I was wondering if anyone had any resources for painting SWAT uniforms (all black) while still retaining details. I've decided to turn all my U.S. Troops in Mars Attacks into SWAT.

I use Americana Graphite for black where I want to show detail. Then regular black for boots and other less important items.

I use a wash method using various shades of black. You can start light, then darken with multiple coats. A solid coat of white primer is necessary for this method. I like Americana Graphite, but often use their Soft Black as well. As John says, I use straight black for boots and belts. Oh yeah, mix some extender into your wash as it helps the paint flow.

Mix a little sky blue into your black paint. No set amount, just till it suits you. This subtly lightens the black without making it look grey. Makes it look like cloth. Use straight black for shoes and belts. You can also ink it and see differences in shade.

I do black, Very dark grey drybrush and then use a nut brown ink to wash.

I did my Royal Winnipeg Rifles in black with a grey drybrush

Any pictures or examples would be fantastic. How's the Army Painter range for these colors?

I'll definitely check out Americana Graphite and Soft Black.

I sometimes use the Andrea black paintset (or parts of it)

I use Delta Ceramcoat, Charcoal Grey or Storm Grey as a highlight.

These Prussians have Storm Grey on their black Shakos, gaiters and boots.

Drybrush a dark purple or a silver for highlights.
And a repeat of Bob Hume---mix a blue with your base black until you get a color you like better.

Make it easy on yourself and use Founry paint system Black 34A, it doesn't come easier .

I use actual black extremely rarely in miniatures painting. There is no real true black – even the rubber of car tires is more grey, really.

For black items, my default is a dark bluish-grey, washed with a black wash, and highlighted with a light grey as necessary.
