"Hell in the Pacific" with Lee Marvin and the "King of Hearts" with Alan Bates both come to mind for me.

Dr. Strangelove!

Strangelove my absolute favorite, Paths of Glory a close second.

A minor gamer nitpick of Paths, the German machine guns on the anthill sound like MG42's instead of Maxim guns. I know, I'll shut up now.

Paths of Glory, Stranglelove is great but Paths of Glory is actually true (more or less).

"Attack!"

Literally about "madness" in command, and how an otherwise obvious head-case can be promoted to his Peter Principal Point.

Literate, originally written for the stage, this is one not to miss. Directed by Robert Aldrich, and starring Jack Palance (before he became a scenery chewer), Eddie Albert (Navy Cross winner at Tarawa), Lee Marvin (Marine wounded at Saipan), Buddy Ebsen, and many fine character actors in support, this movie is not as well known as it deserves to be.

Originally, the US Army was enthusiastic about the production, and promised the use of captured German vehicles, etc. But when its decidedly negative take on aspects of the Army (and National Guard) became clear (still early in the Cold War), they took French Leave from the project. The Producers were left with having to scrounge and adapt what they could get, and that is clearly not what they had been prepared for.

In an age of remakes of remakes, this property cries out to be done again. It was something of a "Private Ryan" project to begin with, and with the authentic equipment now available (and de rigueur in war films), the only problem would be casting and directing. (Though Tom Hanks still could just be the right age for Eddie Albert's "Capt. Cooney"--rhymes with "loony.")

And any "tread head" who bitches over the use of Stuart Tanks for Nazi Armor should get the ALS Ice Bucket treatment for missing the point of the film and the powerful performances just so he can show how "knowledgeable" he is.

Go, Watch, Enjoy.

Master and Commander for it's portrayal of children in combat

Are you referring to the young midshipmen who lost his arm? Common practice at the time and some time after words. Not at all unusual. They were not really considered children at that age. Different times, shorter lifespans.

That is how you got your training to be an officer. In fact most nations including the USN had the same practice. You will find young high school NJROTC cadets on Naval vessels today. Usually during the summer or spring break.
