So, the Sunday Afternoon Flames of War Gentlemen held our fortnightly game this afternoon. It was an Allied breakout along the Gothic Line.
I have never seen more inept dice rolling on both sides than was exhibited today.
Nobody could hit, and when they did nobody could make their saving throw. And when it came to Firepower tests, nobody could Kill.

Frustrating as Hell, but a good time was had by all. grin

Hey! I actually KILLED A TIGER with a M4A3 76mm Sherman! That might explain the earthquake in Northeast PA.

But to give you an idea of what it REALLY felt like, I raced 3 Stuarts to a side shot against 3 PzIVs that failed their Stormtrooper move. Using Stabilizers, I rolled 1, 2, 2, 1, 2, 1. It was that kind of day. Shooting at the Good Guys, the Hun did little better.

We recently had game with similar dice rolling. I feel your pain.

Been there, done that, rolled the dice. It's like Kyle and Cartman in a slap fight.

Hey, it's a holiday weekend! The troops just wanted a day off!

It's like the bumper sticker says: "A bad day of wargaming is better than a good day of fishing."

Okay my niece is visiting and I asked would she like to play crossfire (WW2 Company Level)

I have never witnessed the incredible "luck" that she displayed with absolutely every roll she made.

Her first three rolls were all 2 d6's needing 5 or 6's for hits. 1 hit would mean a pin and two hits a suppression. First two dice rolled resulted in 2 hits=a suppression. Second roll another 2 more hits. And her third throw…yes you guess it: two 6's ….another suppression. My entire 1st platoon left completely ineffective in my first attack. The game ended with my getting heart burn or a head ache…I can't remember now exactly.

Played Lord of the Rings Risk with my 12 year old. He won 10 combats in a row before he even lost a man.

John, console yourself with the fact that the opposition suffered the same bad luck. Last time I played WW2 (Battlegroup Kursk) I lost 5 T34s to shooting from 2 Panthers which had broken down, but survived the whole game!

the earthquake was a punishmen sent from god for killing tigers! lol

I never understood saving throws. So one player dices to shoot at and see whether, he hits an opposing tank. He hits it. The player whose tank has been hit then deploys a counter measure? In WW2? Do they have fullback that suddenly deploys with massive armoured gloves and dives in front of the tank to block the hit?

langobard01 Sep 2014 4:27 a.m. PST

Last time this happened to me, I identified the dice responsible and when I got home, and in front of their comrades, I hit the cowards with a hammer. The survivors took note, and for the next few weeks my dice rolling seemed to avearge 5's and 6's.

Of corse, dice are subtle instruments, at least one of those games was of Black Powder which meant I rolled an unprecedented number of command 'blunders', but I'll happily wear that rather than 1's and 2's…

The saving throw is an armor save.

ubercommando02 Sep 2014 6:59 a.m. PST

The saving throw is just another name for the age old principle of hitting the target and then being able to penetrate its defences. It's not the sole preserve of FoW.

Lentulus02 Sep 2014 11:45 a.m. PST

It is amazing the number of people who get upset at a saving throw by the defender but are find with a penetration or effect roll by the attacker. But people are funny about stats to start with.

lcannard02 Sep 2014 5:14 p.m. PST

As an Italian player, I would be happy if all tanks had the same armour, zero.

wizbangs02 Sep 2014 5:52 p.m. PST

I was turned off on FOW back in the beginning because I couldn't get past the terminology they used: saving throws, bailed out, etc. As a convert I am growing to like the system more & more for it's realism & I just take a momentary pause at what the real purpose of the "saving throw" or "bail out" mean. My advice is "don't get hung up on the syntax."

I knew a guy in Lincoln, NE in the 80s who was notorious for bad dice. At a tournament game, Napoleonics, his French Cuirassiers hit some Spanish cav in the flank. He had something like a 97% chance to win outright. Rolls a 99. The following "result" roll resulted in a defeat for him. He shook his head so hard that he hawked a loogie 20 feet across the room where it landed with an audible "plop" in a room full of noisy people. After that, he just showed up to games with pizzas and watched.
