Did not know that the medal could not be awarded if the eligible person died. The awarding of this to Cushing – who no doubtedly deserved it – is interesting to me because of the doors it opens for others who may have passed before the MOH was authorized for them. I am curious to see if it stays with just Cushing getting it or are we going to see a flood of other medals being awarded because of this?

It could. The Medal of Honor was awarded for bravery as well as handed out for political favors during the war. In all wars there were probably many overlooked people who earned it, especially since the standards for awarding it has changed since the Civil War.

He is not the first guy to awarded the medal long past his due date, not will he be the last. I don't see any flood gate opening.

Yeah… this is not the opening of the flood gates. Anyone that gets bent out of shape because of this is a moron.

Many individuals awarded the MoH received it posthumously. This is not uncommon at all.

Good for him. He waited a long time after paying the ultimate price. It is well deserved.

There's some interesting names in the Civil War list. George Armstrong Custer's brother Tom was awarded it twice!

Also Dan Sickles managed to get his name on the list even though he got his Corps wrecked and lost a leg as a result of his own insubordination!

That is true today, but it is NOT true for the Civil War timeframe.

The original rules for medals of valor were "not only did you have to do something monumentally stupid, you had to survive it."

Arthur MacArthur, father of Douglas MacArthur is one that immediately comes to mind. link

As a Gettysburg buff… Cushing deserved it in my opinion by the standards of any period…

Teddy Roosevelt tried to give it to himself. Well, sort of. You know what I mean.

Alonzo Cushing certainly deserved one, as did his brother William (who sank the ironclad Albemarle).
