I have an unusual request. My son, who is 6, wants to put together a game for himself. He wants two other factions, plus modern US soldiers.

I had thought 15mm would work well and be not too out of scale for the other factions (Battledroid and Clone figures out an old Star Wars Risk game).

The issue is cost. I am going to teach him to paint them (as best I can, since I am no expert), so top of the line minis are not needed, and I want to spend as little as I can on this project.

We are thinking 50-60 figures or so, no vehicles involved at this point (though that is a possibility in future if he continues to like whatever game he puts together with my help).

I liked Rebel Minis 15mm moderns, especially since they are on sale until Friday, but less expensive options would be appreciated as well.

Any suggestions?

Try 15mm Command Decision miniatures. 50 to a bag for $16. USD

Old Glory/Command Decision might be narrowly cheaper I think: link

A bag of infantry and a bag of support weapons would easily get nou to that 50-60 mark, with spares for painting practice. Limited poses but nice enough (I have the African irregulars). I don't know if the pack contents give the same options as the Rebel Minos do though, if that's an issue.

(Edit: Beaten to the draw…)

1/72 scale plastic from Caesar may be an even better option?

I'd second the 1/72 idea. Decent range of plastic vehicles, lots more available in metal/resin.

Base any infantry on pennies or 1/8x3/4" washers.

1/72 will match your Clones better anyway. The Super Battle Droids are more 15mm ish.

1/72 plastics might be a good bet yeah. Otherwise, 15mm infantry don't vary too much in prices: About half a dollar per figure. QRF does most everything for moderns.

My son is 7 and is interested in gaming so all good :)

The larger figure would be easier for the kids to paint as well.

Thank you for the ideas, guys.

I'm going to have think about this some more. :) Those Caesar Modern Elite US forces are looking decent.

The Caesar are good, but kind of a softer plastic that bends too much for me.

Any manufacturers make harder plastic that paints well?

I'm glad I measured the Star Wars figures; I thought 15mm would work, but 15mm figures next to the 21mm Clones would look positively odd (like short Asians next to tall Caucasians), and the 15mms against 24mm plastic figures (Ceasars) would be like Hobbits. :)
