I'm trying to decide on a range (or ranges) of figures for a 28mm FIW skirmish project. Before I commit, I'd like to get some idea of the relative sizes of the various ranges.

How does Conquest look standing next to Galloping Major? How would Wargames Factory plastics look standing next to either? Can you link to pictures of some figure comparisons?

I'm wondering which ranges combine well and which may look a bit jarring sharing the same table.

Cheers.

Conquest look slimmer compared to Galloping Major. I like the Galloping Major figs. Im in the process of painting a slew of them for a commission. They paint up really well with very little figures prep needed. I havent seen a single mold line in the 60 figures Ive worked on so far.

My FIW collection is mostly Galloping Major with a smattering of Redoubt and Northstar. I'm very picky about size compatibility and all three ranges have similar heights and heft. Conquest are a lot smaller and finer detailed, so I didn't add them to my collection. I agree with Chuck that the casting quality on the Galloping Major figures is exceptional. Redoubt offer a lot of unusual subjects and vignettes like Indians scalping soldiers, soldiers in boats, indians with firebrands, and fleeing civilians. The pack contents of the Northstar figs are tailored to the Muskets and Tomahawks, so you can have a starter force right out of the box.

There are lot of great miniature options. Good luck with your project!

Kings Mt match Galloping Major and Redoubt perfectly.

Thanks for the replies, hobbyists.

So far that's three votes for Galloping Major, Redoubt, Northstar and Kings Mountain.

So maybe I'm not completely sold on Conquest yet.

More research! ;)

Any chance of some pictures of size comparisons? Or even a mix of said figures sharing a tabletop?

Also, US distributor(s) for (some of) these products?

@chuck05: I may be contacting you about getting some figures painted, once I decide what I want. ;)

@Hydra Studios: Thanks for the info and encouragement.

@nevinsrip: Thanks for the info!

I have close to 100 Woodland Indian warriors made up of Conquest, Perry, Old Glory, Front Rank, Dixon and Redoubt. I think the nicest figs are Conquest followed by Perry.
I really like the look of Conquest and they match up size wise with the Perry figs which are also nice.

I like Conquest,Perry's Indians, some militia that can be used for FIW.I really like Fife & Drum. They also have a few militia for FIW.Of course Minden.Crann Tara British and coming French are made for the Jacobite Rebellion but can be used for FIW.I myself prefer more realistically proportioned figures.

marco56 link'd:

•(large class) Galloping Major, Northstar, Blue Moon, and Redoubt
•(standard class) Front Rank, Eureka, Crusader, Conquest, and Perry
•(small class) Foundry – which can also go with RAFM and Old Glory

Awesome. Thank you. I need to bookmark that specific page, plus I blog-linked the blog. I'll be using this again and again.

From what I can see in the image, the "Large" class is "heroic" 28mm (to the chin), "Standard" class is pretty much to the eyes, and "Small" class is top of head.

It seems King's Mountain would go with the "Large" class. Where would you categorize Dixon, Fife and Drum, Minden, Crann Tara, etc.?

I'm still working my way through the many sites and pages and packs and poses. So far I'm leaning toward GM (and fellow "Large" 28s) OR Conquest (and fellow "Standard" 28s).

I'm also wondering: Which of these are readily available in the US, and which are UK only?

P.S. One thing I will say about manufacturer and distributor websites: Pictures are much appreciated. Large pictures where I can actually see the sculpts are really appreciated.

Clunky sites with few or no or small or fuzzy pics are not the most fun to shop. Sites with nice size pics on one main page that can be enlarged, with clear pack names with useful, dynamic poses keep my interest. Sites that are easy to navigate, and that have useful search tools, (as well as meaningful range names) also keep my interest. I tend to buy things when I'm enjoying the shopping experience.

Out of stock items should be clearly marked on the main page, not the item page. Items which are not going to be restocked or that are not going to still be offered at the "special multi-pack/army starter discount" or that have been discontinued should be taken down.

I understand that these are often one-man-shop/labor-of-love "businesses" or are sidelines for hobbyists, but a good website is worth what you paid for it. It drives business because it's a neat place to browse, which makes one want to visit again.

Offered as a consumer's perspective. Something for manufacturers and distributors to consider. One man's opinion.

One other question: Does anyone know where Wargames Factory plastics usually fall in this range of relative figure height? Are they "Standard" 28mm? "Heroic"?

marco56 Supporting Member of TMP08 Sep 2014 6:29 p.m. PST

Most of these can be bought here in the states.Redoubt has no US distributor anymore.I think Front Rank has one distributor over here. The War Store has a lot of these. Architects of War,Brigade Games and of course Loyalhanna Outpost and Conquest Miniatures.

The Wargames Factory plastic that I have fall more in the center size close to the Perry size.

grommet3718 Sep 2014 4:27 p.m. PST

Thanks for the info.

That has me leaning toward the Conquest end of the scale.

grommet3720 Sep 2014 8:34 p.m. PST

Of the following, which besides Conquest are available in the US?

Front Rank, Eureka, Crusader, Conquest, and Perry
