Hey gang, I am in the process of a massive re-basing project. I bought some based figs but I need to remove them from their current bases so I can rebase them. The trouble is removing the unknown glue. Are there any easy ways to do this? I've tried scraping, filing, and that works but not very effectively. Thank! |

IDK, but try placing in the freezer for a while then flexing the base between two pairs of pliers. It was the only way I was able to 'unbase' some figures which had been fixed with an unknown fixative, perhaps epoxy |

If its superglue, you can get a debonder spray to dissolve the superglue from a specialist hobby shop. You may need to scratch way any paint or texture material to expose the superglue for it to work effectively. If its a water based white glue try soaking the figures and bases in some hot water, this will slowly dissolve the PVA. I find the hotter the better. I did this recently and it took about 20-30 minutes with reapplication of more hot water. If its a Polyurethane glue then you will have to follow the current course. Do a tester first before you attempt to do the mass of figures just to make sure there are no side affects on the paint etc. I hope this helps |

Sounds like the figures have been removed from the bases and you're left dealing with the lump left on the bottom? You've tried just rubbing the vigorously over sandpaper? |

This method usually works for me. First, put the based figures in the freezer. Then, place them in a basin and pour VERY HOT WATER™ (from the tap, not boiled) up to the knees of the figure. This accomplishes several things. Thermal shock between three different substrates with differing coefficients of thermal expansion. Bond is loosened. Hot water degrades most bonds. Repeat. Repeat until the figure pops right off the base and hopefully leaves the glue behind too. This has worked for me with super glue, epoxy and white glue. This also has the advantage of using no solvents except water and should not damage any paint. |

I second the OFM's method. Most of the time it works on the first attempt. When your missus looks in freezer and gives you 'that' look. Just tell her that they are in Siberia – no more questions. |
