…Donetsk Region.

" A group of Serbian volunteers, helping Donetsk militia to fight government troops in eastern Ukraine says they have repelled an offensive of pro-Kiev military forces who attempted overnight to break through to a vital motorway.

"Two tanks, belonging to the neo-Bandera [thugs], and one self-propelled gun together with their crews, as well a mountain gun, were destroyed during the fight," the press office of the Donetsk self-defense forces cited the Serbs as saying.

According to the report, two Serbs were lightly wounded during the standoff, and soon re-joined their battalion…"

That's part of the problem. These Ukrainian separatists are heavily supported by a variety of mercenaries from outside Ukraine. They are not locals fighting for some independence of Donbass…

It's a war by proxie. The Russians are using all sorts of friendly nationals and forces to support the rebels. Not really new though as the Chechens are being used too in a similar role.

Good thing that a dude in semi-military fatigues toting an AK looks like any other, eh Geoff? Makes sculpting that much easier!

GeoffQRF24 Aug 2014 9:12 a.m. PST

Just a matter of deciding what headgear to put on him, if any

Lion in the Stars24 Aug 2014 9:54 a.m. PST

Just make a couple sprues of various headgear, should be good to go, Geoff.

Griefbringer24 Aug 2014 11:01 a.m. PST

Mountain gun???

GeoffQRF24 Aug 2014 11:22 a.m. PST

Probably mean towed artillery, as opposed to self propelled

Anyone forget Ukraine NATO friends were rocketing the hell out of the Serbs during the break up and Natoing of various parts of Yugoslavia? This is long memory payback
This is a war of ideology and big brothers interfering and again the innocent are in the middle.
Sad all they had to do is say yes there are grievances let's talk no they sent troops instead. Shame on all the protagonists.

GeoffQRF24 Aug 2014 2:44 p.m. PST

Talk was offered, and bluntly rejected. The self appointed DPR held an illegitimate referendum, declared independence and declared that all Ukrainian armed forces within their territory were illegal occupiers. They haven't moved from that position towards one of negotiation since.

"This is long memory payback"

Please. The Serbs have been Russian bongo boys for centuries and never miss a chance to lick their master's toes.

Please. The Serbs have been Russian bongo boys for centuries and never miss a chance to lick their master's toes.

Except Serbian dominated Yugoslavia had a massive falling out with USSR back in late 1940s/early 1950s that was so bad that USA gladly supplied NATO-level equipment to the Yugoslav Army. In fact this was the only "Communist" country where the airforces mainstays in the 1950s and early 1960s were T-33, F-84G, CLIV Sabre and F-86D instead of MiG-15/-17.

My parents (who were Yugoslavs from Croatia) always talked about Yugoslavia being protected from the Russians by the Americans. This was the general perception held by a lot of people in that country.

So much for the Serbs being Russian bongo boys. It wasn't until breakup of Yugoslavia and USA/NATO taking breakaway states' side that the Serbs chummed up with Russia.

In reality this is just Serbian mercs earning a buck. They've been active in other parts of the world too e.g. Democratic Republic of Congo.

In fact since collapse of Communist states and Apartheid in South Africa, there's been plenty of mercernaries from those countries fighting in various crappy wars and especially in technical and skilled roles such as pilots and maintainers.

Shardik24 Aug 2014 6:12 p.m. PST

Wow, they started WWI, they did Srebinica and the siege of Sarajevo in the 90s, and now this. Poster boys for world peace aren't they.

Shardik24 Aug 2014 6:13 p.m. PST

But making up for all of that, they did give us Ana Ivanovich

GeoffQRF25 Aug 2014 6:34 a.m. PST

Reports of a column of '10 tanks and 2 APCs', variable as much as 30 vehicles, bearing markings of DPR moving towards Mariupol in the south. You may remember Mariupol ad being the city that infamously decided it didn't want to be taken over by separatists, and a bunch of rather burly steel workers threw them out and tore down the barricades.

Ukraine's military said border guards had halted the column about 5km (3 miles) north-east of Novoazovsk, which is about 10km from the border in the far south-east of Ukraine…

Weasel25 Aug 2014 10:08 a.m. PST

I'd figure T55 but the journalist definition of "tank" can be anything from a BMP to a particularly aggro looking dump truck.

Lion in the Stars25 Aug 2014 10:32 a.m. PST

The Journalist definition of 'tank' is "anything military with tracks."

GeoffQRF25 Aug 2014 11:26 a.m. PST

Ukrainian Army representative on TV just a moment ago refereed to tanks.

Deadone25 Aug 2014 4:05 p.m. PST

Wow, they started WWI, they did Srebinica and the siege of Sarajevo in the 90s, and now this. Poster boys for world peace aren't they.

They tried to wipe out the indigenous populations and took their land, supported slavery to 1865, invaded Spanish colonies and converted them to puppet dictatorships, trained death squads in El Salvador, toppled democracies in Chile, Lebanon etc, supported dictatorships everywhere around the world, invaded Grenada, Panama, Iraq, Afghanistan, helped turn Libya and Iraq into failed states, dropped more bombs on Laos than any other country on the planet, destabilised Cambodia etc etc etc etc.

Geez them Americans are poster boys for world peace. :P

We could replace American with Russians, Brits, French, Germans (up to 1945), Egyptians, Syrians, Iraqis, Israelis, Libyans, Ugandans, Cubans etc etc.

Ukraine said on Monday that its troops had captured 10 Russian servicemen in eastern Ukraine.

Ukraine's security service said its military had captured the 10 Russian paratroopers near the Ukrainian village of Dzerkalne, about 50km (30 miles) south-east of the rebel-held city of Donetsk.

"Russian soldiers have been detained with personal documents and weapons," a statement said, adding: "Investigators opened a criminal probe into illegal border crossing by armed Russian citizens."

….just waiting for confirmation on this.

This is from the column of 10 tanks reported yesterday headed along the southern coast towards Mariupol. If confirmed it obviously has major repercussions.

Daniel S26 Aug 2014 2:16 a.m. PST

According to BBC Russia has confirmed the identity of the Paras but claim that they had gotten lost while on border patrol link

GeoffQRF26 Aug 2014 2:33 p.m. PST

Not sure what's more embarrassing for the paras… getting caught, or claiming they got lost :-)

Mako1126 Aug 2014 6:08 p.m. PST

"Not sure what's more embarrassing for the paras… getting caught, or claiming they got lost :-)".

The one claiming they're being used as cannon-fodder by Putin.

I suspect he may not survive to reap his pension benefits, given that comment.

GeoffQRF26 Aug 2014 11:04 p.m. PST

My wife listened to the interviews.

"When did you realise you were in Ukraine?"

"When we saw the Ukrainian tank with Ukrainian flag"

"Then what happened?"

"The grads started firing"

"Whose grads? Your grads?"

"Yes"…
